Hello everyone
This is the blog where I show you my favourite plain skirts, the non-flowery ones that I wear nearly every day in the UK.
I do find these skirts exceedingly versatile as one can wear them with a simple white tee when it’s warm. And hey and three cheers, we are going to have a few warmer days this week – what we Brits call a heatwave as the temperatures will touch 25C (77F) or perhaps even higher. We don’t have air con so we do feel that humid heat. See, I’m already slightly wary as heat and me, I just don’t do.
Enough of that and back to my plain skirts. Unlike the flowery skirts I’ve shown you I feel I can wear these skirts all the time as they are so versatile, mainly because you can wear many layers over them, which is what I’ve been doing through the weeks and months of Spring and early Summer.
Let’s start with this grey balloon skirt. Here it is worn with a New Look white t-shirt that cost all of £7.

This is, unusually for me, bought new in Zara, but people I have worn it again and again. It is the most used skirt in my wardrobe, so it’s earning its keep.

And here again when I was dressed in many layers.

That was the 8th June and it was freezing! I was wearing leggings under the skirt and a vest under the yellow top, plus a yellow cardi you can’t see, and then the faux leather jacket, and I was still cold – so different to Spain!
Then there’s the plain beige skirt, which I adore, and you’ve seen before as it’s an old charity shop skirt bought years ago. I wear this one a lot too.

Here it is again with many layers on another cold day in June.

Then there is this black skirt from M&S, which I’ve worn a couple of times up to London.

Love the fact you can’t see any travel stains, as going to London takes two hours on public transport and inevitably there are creases and other marks you could get on a lighter skirt.

And finally, here is a skirt I haven’t worn yet – now that isn’t good but I aim to soon. It’s a white skirt, which I won’t be wearing on a train to London, but I will take it on my cruise and any other fancy place I go to locally.

I’ve really dressed down this lovely skirt with a plain (charity shop) black tee and my off-white trainers. But it could be worn with better shoes such as sparkly sandals plus an evening black lace top – which is what I will wear on the cruise.
That’s all for now, but do let me know if you are a skirt person or otherwise!
With love, Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

I love all your plain skirts. They are such work-horses. You could go anywhere in them. I’m just realising now, I need more plain skirts. Unfortunately as a 5”2’ shorty most of yours would skim the ground on me, so I’ll just have to get my sewing machine working! I do have an old Burda pattern similar to your first skirt. Now all I need is suitable material. Re the sudden summer, it’s not doing me much good either. I need a slower change, not all the chopping and changing, cold, then hot, then wet! Oh well at least I’ve seen less rain than my compatriots in the north West.
Oh I love that description of these skirts – they are work horses! I wear them again and again. Hope you can rustle up one for yourself. I’m really keen on those puffed balloon skirts – they’re very attractive.
I agree we’re having such a screwball Summer but thankfully, despite these few days of hotter weather, we are not having the heat that other countries have got – long may that last!
Thanks Trish 😊
I am so glad that I purchased my plain navy skirt a couple of years ago. it goes so many places. book club, to a party or out to dinner. Today is the first day that it has not been really hot and humid. We are having a bit of a heat wave here in New York. Last week my daughter and I braved the 90 degree temperatures to explore the Storm King Art Center. 500 acres of forest and meadows which display large sculptures of various artists. Beautiful nature and impressive art, It was the only day she had free so we went in spite of the heat. Truly worth it! I did notice that many of the women were wearing summer dresses and trainers or as we call them sneakers, often with a straw hat to protect from the sun. Probably the most comfortable choice for such weather.
Love, Darby
We’ve been reading about the heat in the US that included New York and I thought of you. Hopefully it wasn’t too bad and of course you do all have air con everywhere you go. We don’t – there might be some in some public transport (but not all) and some shops and stores (but not all). Having it in homes would be very rare.
I shall go up to London tomorrow in a summer dress, trainers and a straw hat! Lovely to hear about your cultural activities. Thanks so much Darby 😊
The funny thing is my AC conked out a couple of weeks ago and can’t be fixed until next week. I am managing OK and realizing just how spoiled we are here.
Oh wow, I’ve often wondered how people in the US would manage without air con. Hope it gets sorted soon. But stepping back a bit (and I hope you don’t mind this thought) what if this planet gets hotter and hotter – are we i) all going to have air con? But ii) that will, in turn, make the planet evermore hot? It’s a conundrum.
Your skirts are lovely Penny but I particularly like the white one and look forward to seeing a picture of it dressed up perhaps on your cruise.
The hat you wear with the leather jacket is fantastic. It suits you so well.
Love Charmaine
I will dress this skirt up soon and will definitely wear it on the cruise – which is not until late August/early September.
Thanks so much Charmaine 🙂
Oh, that white skirt looks so fun! Is the hem a bubble type hem, too? I am a skirt person, but I haven’t worn them for a couple of years as the menopause/post hysterectomy stomach is sticking around. I’m working on it, though, and hope to wear skirts again and again! They are the first thing I look at when I’m shopping online!

The white one is a balloon/bubble skirt and I should have said – think it will be really good to wear as a smart-wear!
I still have a protruding gut myself – think it is a dilemma for all of us. Some days it’s better than others though.
Thanks so much Marsha 😊
I love balloon skirts and your white and grey ones are fabulous. I’m enjoying every minute of this , heatwave, as it is already over by the time its weekend!
Yes, balloon skirts are such fun! I am liking this better weather but not if it gets too hot! Actually it is nice to get out the summer dresses!
Thanks Nancy 😊
Of course, I do love your plain skirts , they are just my style and as you say so versatile as they can be teamed with many colours and dressed up or down.
Hope your mild Summer weather continues , I had noticed the extreme heat had missed the UK.
All the best.
Hi Jill, well we’ve got a mini-heatwave (which will be over tomorrow) and the country is already panicking about it! Temps might reach 84F/29C today in London where we are going – to the Tate this time. Thankfully there is air con on the train but not much elsewhere which is why we puff and pant in the humid heat!
I thought you’d like the plain skirts – they really are my thing and yes, so versatile.
Thanks Jill 😊
The balloon style is perfect on you. The new one that you haven’t worn yet could be dressed up for a night at the theatre/ballet (although people don’t seem to dress up much nowadays). love the versatility of skirts. Thanks for linking.
At the moment I am absolutely in love with balloon skirts! And I will dress up the white skirt very soon – I’ve just got to find an event for it!
Skirts are amazing and so versatile.
Thanks Gail 😊
I am sharing my travel outfits from our 2 week trip next month and you will see that skirts were a top favorite on that trip. I did just buy two skirts that I am waiting on, both plain in color but not plain in style: an A-line skirt in tan linen, it comes with a belt but you can change it up and a tulle tan skirt (like my red one). Cannot wait to receive them. I did them ship to store and missed the cut off so I think I have one more week to wait. Love the balloon style skirts: so fun and edgy!

Yes, skirts are so versatile and you can dress them up and dress them down. And balloon skirts are really great I will go look at hour blog now!
Thanks Mireille 😊
Hi, Penny – I was never a skirt person, but with the weather so hot in recent summers (here in the U.S.) I have taken to wearing skirts, dresses and caftans this half of the year. I love to see your skirt outfits. Thanks for sharing – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
We’ve been reading about the heat in the US – hope you’re OK. Yesterday was really hot (for the UK) and humid with it, and with pretty much no air con I wore a long skirt that was breezy and cool
Thanks Angie 😊
