Hello everyone

Age brings autonomy and freedom, says Brooke Shields, who I see as a youngster – she’s 59.  At the very least, at 59, she is far from being old. But for her, I am sure that is what age means to her.

Age. What does it mean to you, the reader of this blog? Obviously, the answer to that will differ as you age. Ageing is unthinkable when you’re young because it’s so far away. Into the teens and the 20s you see someone who is 59, as Brooke Shields is, as ancient, while a person who is nearing 80 is very, very old indeed. When you are in mid-life juggling with work and children, you are might also be dealing with ageing parents. Age then is a challenge to be dealt with and organised. It is a sobering lesson to realise that all your organising skills will not put a stop to the tsunami of age that has come to your parent. You also think I will never ever be like that myself. I will be different. I will age well.

And then oh bliss, the retirement years, when you are free to develop those parts of you that lay dormant through your working life. Hey, you can travel, take up hobbies and interests, entertain friends, go visit places, and indeed take care of your health through exercise classes, walking, and ever more health-giving practices such as different diets and having a Personal Trainer. You name it, you can do it. You have autonomy. You are free.

Until, that is, you are not.

Of course, as people often say ageing is a privilege as the alternative is, and let’s say it, the alternative to ageing is death. Funny how people avoid saying that word. Passing is a favourite, which, I think, totally denies the fact of death.  And of course, one wants life. But what kind of life?

Now I know some of you might be thinking, ‘this all sounds a bit gloomy Penny, ‘you’re young for your age, or you look so young or ‘you’re so young in spirit’, or worst of all, ‘you’re as young as you think you are’ etc, etc. All of which, means for heaven’s sake be more positive, Penny! Why not think of all the good things that you’ve done and are coming along. And punch, out goes my fist in your face, metaphorically speaking, of course, but I’m thinking it!

Because we do so avoid saying: I am old. This is our reality. Why can’t we say it? WHY do we not admit it. Actually I recently saw a short clip of Helen Mirren scolding an interviewer who’d said to her, but, but you’re so young, and young in spirit. No, she said, I am old. But I am full of life.

I loved that.

And I say the same. I am old and over this last year – I have aged. I am now a much older woman. But I am full of ideas and new ventures – read on.

Btw, did you know that scientists have found you don’t age slowly instead you age in two bursts at 44 and then 60. Hmm, that’s interesting because for me, my ageing ‘bursts’ happened 4 years ago when I was 74 and again, this year, at 78.

Actually, I want to say here and now, I am not depressed about this. I’m rather interested in this being ‘old’. There’s quite a lot of detective work to be done and some important things have to be sorted out. Indeed, I believe I am transitioning from that ‘jolly hockey-sticks’ retirement phase of the young-old who want to do nothing but travel and expand their interests, to an older stage. But not, I hasten to add, the final stage which I see as frail and old. Which is where the British NHS General Practitioner (GP) thinks I might be. Apparently, you tip over to ‘frailty’ as soon as you announce you are unbalanced when you walk. Which is nonsense!

Yup, I still have that feeling of being unbalanced when I go outside. It is a classic proprioception issue because as soon as I go inside somewhere – a shop or a cinema or a restaurant there are walls and other obstacles like seating, shelves, counters and a ceiling for my senses to ‘ping’ against, so I walk normally. And of course, this is where all practitioners and therapists see and assess me – and what do they see? Someone who walks pretty normally without a stick and/or an arm to hold on to. I am fine indoors. And they never see beyond that.

Outside it’s different. It’s as though a force field hits me – of nothingness. Woooa! Btw, I am never dizzy and that also flummoxes these practitioners. Instead, it’s like a plumbline down my middle that goes awry and I feel as though I am going to fall.

So, people, I am not going outside anymore unless I have an arm to hold on to – not to lean on you understand, just an arm to hold onto to get that feedback that is missing at the moment.

Which is a bastard – apols for the language but it is how I feel. I feel, what moi? Who did everything the Ageing-Well industry said was the thing to do. Moi, who did classes and exercised, kept young through multiple interests, and never got over-weight. Blooming heck!

Ok, end of small futile rant. What am I doing about this situation?  Because no-one else is fixing this. I have to fix it myself.

First of all, I have begun a course of acupuncture and have great hopes for this practitioner who ‘got’ the situation and me immediately. He sees many people, he said, like me.  You have no idea what a relief it is to be understood by someone who does not look at you in a puzzled or slightly quizzical, disbelieving way.

So, I am not the only one? Yup, he tells me that he and other colleagues around the UK are treating many clients who are suffering from Long Covid with a variety of symptoms including balance issues. OK try anything I think and I am. He will also treat my tendonitis in my glute which doesn’t help the walking. And btw, in the New Year, I am also thinking of having some other complimentary treatments.

Second thing is I expect to see another ophthalmology consultant soon and believe that my cataracts will be operated on in either January or February – no date is set yet. My distance sight really doesn’t help either as it’s very off now.

If my balance isn’t resolved after the cataract op and the course of acupuncture, I think I need to see a neurologist. Always at the back of my mind is the fact that my grandmother had Parkinson’s. But hey it’s all part of the detective work.

Meanwhile I still go out with friends either by getting a lift to somewhere (indoors not outdoors) or walking into Lewes with Mr F who is being a brick about it all. I also aim to get up to London in January as soon as Mr F gets over a lurgy that half the population of the UK has at the moment.

I have also done a lot of thinking about the blog. Did you notice the hints I have been dropping into my posts recently? No more hints, here is the news – Frugal Fashion Shopper has to come to an end. But I hasten to add I will keep writing, and writing a blog – see below.

It is the shopping part of the blog that simply cannot be sustained by me any longer. Shopping for clothes even charity shop/thrifted clothes is a complete no-no these days as we really must reduce our consumption – this planet cannot sustain fast fashion and should not. As I keep writing about the reduction of consuming clothes, I have to be seen to actually do this and put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. So Frugal Fashion Shopper has to stop.

It is not only I cannot justify the shopping part, it’s also the grinning at the camera and photographing outfits that sometimes suit me and sometimes don’t! I am so wanting to not be that person! This also has to stop.

Because I want to be real!

The thing is, blogging is also very time-consuming. I have 4 writing projects on the back burner one of which I’ve been trying to write for 20 years – that’s the memoir of my mother and the child I believe she had before her marriage. I have been trying to write this for years now. And never succeeded as I write all the time but mainly for the Frugal blog. Then there is the memoir of my life and times, including some funny stories about nursing in the 1960s. Nursing is so different now that it is like describing modern times to an Ancient Greek – or t’other way round, if you like.

However, I feel I cannot abandon everyone who reads the Frugal blog. I love the comments I get and feel that you who comment regularly are part of a wonderful group of women who I truly love. But I do so want to look at my writing projects and finish at least one of them by the end of 2025. I also want  time to pursue my fitness and take a couple of courses.

One of the writing projects I’ve been thinking about for ages has been writing about Older Ageas in NOT about Ageing Well. Because what happens when you don’t!

And that is what my new blog is going to be broadly about.

I see the new blog as being part of my neglected writing projects. It will centre around ‘reclaiming and embracing older age’. It won’t, however, be all about age related health issues, there will be the occasional style post (rather than what I’ve bought recently) because I still love clothes, people, oh yes I do! And there will always be the trips to art galleries and exhibitions.

Basically, it will be about the life of a woman moving to maybe the last decade of her life. Look, let’s be real. I could live to 98, but on the other hand, maybe not, but 88? Yes. What are the stories we should we tell ourselves as we move into actual ageing and those last (maybe, who knows) 10 years. What is the reality around ageing: the joys and sorrows, the ups and downs, the nice things, the travel, the trips, the art, films, books, as well as oh gaaaawd, this….. fill in whatever you think is coming your way!!

Do you see what I am getting at? The Frugal blog is no longer me. Here instead is a new approach and a new blog.

Now to some logistics. I will only be posting I’m afraid once or twice a month. Or maybe more, or maybe less. We’ll see how it goes because, don’t forget, I want to finish the projects on the back-burner and have time to do other stuff.

And here’s something you can help me with.  Because I will no longer be the Frugal Fashion Shopper I have to set up a completely new blog – with a different name. Oh. My. Word! The names I have written down and discarded! But I have whittled it down to 3. What do you think of them? Btw, I had wanted to be Creative Crone – but that’s already taken.

  • Older, edgy and opinionated – embracing older age
  • Older and not wiser – views from the other side of youth
  • Looking to the future – views from the frontline of ageing

Also, as this is a new blog – I cannot transfer you to this blog. You will have to sign up for it. But at least I’ll know if you do that, you really do want to read all my witterings about life, the universe, and ageing. Oh, and I didn’t say, when I feel I want to be political, that post is not going on to My Other Blog, because you know what, older people have views, and I am not separating these views out and putting them into another blog. These views will be part of this new blog – hence that title up there that includes the word, opiniated! Yup that’s me!

The timeline is that this new blog will appear soon – but there’s some IT management to go through, especially the domain name. I will therefore continue writing the Frugal blog until the new blog is up and running. When it is and I post on it, I shall tell you on the Frugal blog and give you instructions and a link to get to the new blog. Then for some weeks every time I post on the new blog I will give you notice of it on that Frugal blog, but eventually I shall stop doing that.

It is the end of an era. But it is the time to do it.  Thank you so much for reading this to the end. I have valued you and appreciated you all so much – thank you for supporting me through the years. But hey it’s a new year, and a new approach, a new venture and a new blog. I’m up for it – are you?

With love, Penny, who is no longer the Frugalfashionshopper!

P.S. Do give me some feedback about this new venture – and the title!  Thanks in advance to all you lovely people

It looks like it might be the first one but I shall wait and have another think before I am totally sure – then we have to look for a domain name and it might not be those exact words. And then Mr F designs it. But it will all come together and I am so encouraged by everyone’s response.

Here’s wishing you a Happy New Year to you too Caroline 😊

I will be eagerly looking out for your new blog, Penny! It sounds just what I am looking for. I tend to look for comfort and practicality in clothes these days, while I am very much tied to home with a sore hip (!) while I care for my husband with the cruel condition of Vascular Dementia, but I still have the same mind, political leanings and interests I had in more active days – would like to hear more from and about like-minded women such as you.
Count me in for the new blog!

Hi…I also like the first name and applaud you for wanting to write about something real and pertinent to so many of us. While inside we may feel the same, there is no doubt that the changes age brings are present …let’s explore them and be positive about how to address and manage them! Looking forward to a new era…

I began the Frugal blog 11 years ago and I agree nothing stays the same, as indeed I have changed in many ways since then, both physically and in my health and in my looks. But significantly I think I have developed my writing for the better. I also treasure the relationships that have come through blogging. That is such a positive which is why I won’t ever give it up!

Thanks Karin – it’s been great to get your (and everyone else’s) feedback 😊

    Hello, Penny

Good for you! I think too many of us hang on to ‘stuff’ (of all sorts) for far too long – I know I do – and don’t/won’t cut the cord and move on.

But you are! Bravo, my friend! I remember my daughter saying to me once, “Mum, you taught me that if you can’t go round or over something then you jolly well go straight through it!”, a comment I still treasure. You are doing just that, Penny. You’ve acknowledged a life-stage you’re not entirely happy with, but instead of merely grumbling about it have identified ways of jolly well going straight through it. Respect, lady!

I doubt very few of your readers will let you travel this new road alone. I reckon we’re in it together, no question, so you won’t be alone in addressing your health issues plus forging new writing paths. If not now, when, eh?

So good luck with this great new (ad)venture, and know that you’re not alone. Having enjoyed your blog for a long time, both blogs actually, including our occasional political sparring, all terribly ladylike (!), I am already looking forward to your new blog and all its contents.

Count me in already, it’ll be a grand start to a new year!

Hi Zepherine and thank you so much for this and your many other comments. Yup, this is a new life-stage and I both relish getting to grips with it while at the same time often think, good grief, what the …… But it is a definite stage and hey, embrace it, deal with it.

It is, btw, simply great to know we are all in the same boat – the one we will all find ourselves in. So off we all go on this new (ad)venture!

      Thanks so much Zepherine 😊

Looking forward to your new blog what ever you decide to call it.

The second title would be my preference closely followed by the third. Don’t like the first.

As a mere baby of 69 it is very helpful to know the problems/dilemmas the future holds. Forewarned is forearmed has long been my motto.

I enjoy reading about your visits to exhibitions and recommendations for TV and books.

Fashion is still an interest even if I no longer need/want to be fashionable. Looking good for my age is what I am aiming for.

Balance – cataracts might be the cause. Late mother in law had falls we later realised were caused by poor vision due to cataracts not being removed when advised by her optician.

Wishing you the best for the future.

Thank you Sue and yes I’ll definitely continue the posts on exhibitions, TV, films, books – these are so important to me. As is of course, fashion and style. I still love clothes and want to look good (for my age 😁) But I don’t want to feel as though it’s all about buying stuff – because even though it was mostly from charity shops I was very guilty of that.

And absolutely re: cataracts – my vision is very off now and fuzzy in the distance. That can’t help one bit.

Thanks again Sue – the feedback is so helpful 😊

So a new writing project is always going to be a positive thing for you. I like the second suggestion for a blog name by the way. But whatever you choose I hope the activity brings you joy. Hi Penny
I have enjoyed the frugal fashion blog and look forward to your new one. I prefer older, edgy and opinionated. I recently had a cold and was left with viral labyrinthitis – complete loss of balance. It was scary. My balance was never great despite going to Pilates and yoga most of my life. It also has been worse since having Covid. So I completely understand your concerns.
    Best wishes for 2025.

Labyrinthitis is ghastly, Bill gets it from time to time – so sorry to hear about your bout. And that’s so interesting Jan as I too have never had good balance despite doing yoga for many years – and now Pilates. And then, since 2023, my balance has been affected big time and always after a virus. I’ll see what the acupuncture does and if it helps.

Very best wishes for 2025 to you too 😊

Well, I have enjoyed your writing for years and although I started for the frugal fashion, I really like the addition of real life. The travel, books, health issues, movies, even political views, and tales from your life and family, with hair and skin care etc thrown in the mix keeps me eager for the next installment. I will be eagerly awaiting your next chapter whatever the name, but do like a combination of 1 and 2, older, edgy and opinionated, views from the other side of youth. Good luck with all of your other projects, I do love your writing. Also, best with the health issues, it is such a struggle to find someone to listen. Hugs to you.

Btw, the acupuncturist is a great listener and seems to get ‘it’ immediately – quite a relief as so many have been either puzzled or it is all about thinking positively that will get me walking without unsteadiness. But actually I need some help with it. I feel now as though I am actually getting some help.

Yes the new blog will be mix of subjects and items but always focused on ageing, I hesitate to say ageing well though!!! Because the blog will look at how we adapt through these years, by looking at both what helps us through adversity as well as what makes us happy – books, films, tv, family, children, friends, visits here and there, outings & holidays.

Now I know this is what people want it is quite a relief to turn away from constantly ‘shopping’!!!

Thanks Holly, and yes the balance issue began in the Spring of 2023 after having ‘flu’ then Covid, but I got over it. Then it happened again after the 2024 winter cough, but I got over it. Finally I became really unbalanced after Covid in July of 2024. So it always happens after a virus and/or Covid.

I am pleased to have found (through a friend) an acupuncturist who is interested in Covid related issues. Think it will really help. But getting the cataracts done will also help for sure.

Thanks also for the feedback on the new name 😊

Dear Penny, I have enjoyed reading both of your Blogs for a few years now but will look forward to your new one when it arrives. I love your writing style but agree with some of the replies that the clothes bit was not so interesting to me as your other observations on life. Including thoughts about politics, the state of the world and ‘life’ into one Blog sounds like a good plan but please continue to include stuff about exhibitions, art, films, books, etc.
I like all three suggestions for the new name for your Blog but my preference is for the first title.
I hope 2025 is a happy and healthy one for you and your family.

Walking! Yes! Especially up and down stairs and especially those stairs that don’t have anything to hold on to. E.g. at the rugby match, when surrounded by people rushing and standing right in front of me so I can’t see the steps.

Hi Penny, such a great idea to make changes when necessary!
I’ve been following you for years because your blog is always so interesting to read. My choice for the new blog is No.1.
Btw I had an aging burst this year when I turned 80. Last year I had my cataracts removed, and this year I bought hearing aids (not free here in Spain), and they have been life changing. I also began taking more supplements and now I feel ready for whatever 2025 has in store!

I very much look forward to your new blog Penny. It sounds brilliant. To be honest, I have most enjoyed the other bits of your blog, including the ‘other’ one, rather than the charity shop shopping. Name wise, I’m sure it’ll be great whichever you choose but I’m less keen on the first one, than the others.
I don’t think you are being negative about your current challenges, just realistic. Unfortunately, life throws stuff at us that we don’t always want to deal with and that does include ageing, although individual experience varies massively. As you’re finding, sometimes clinicians are very set in their ways of thinking and you sometimes have to go your own way to find what works for you. Alternative therapies can help, though they’re not for everyone. I’ve been caring for my daughter for nearly 18 years now – she has severe ME and some of the attitudes from the medical profession you come across are mind blowing. Alternative therapists know how to listen and can help. There is a close link with ME and long Covid and both are misunderstood. I wonder if you’re thinking that Covid could be a contributory factor to your balance problems.
Anyway, I would like to wish you and Mr F a very happy new year. I look forward to reading more from you in 2025. Definitely make a start on writing about your Mum and also your own earlier experiences. They sound as if they will both be fascinating projects and you’ll be so pleased you’ve done them.

Hi Sylvia and what a dedicated parent you are – so very, very sorry about your daughter’s situation. And yes, indeed, I have found the GP has very fixed and I think out-dated ideas about what might be causing this unsteadiness. I get sent straight off to inappropriate services that deal with older people instead of some thought going into why I get these episodes after a virus including Covid. Yes, I do think there is a contributory factor from Covid, although there are other factors include the cataracts, plus the tendonitis which doesn’t help at all. But the acupuncturist is far more gung-ho and I am sticking with this for a few sessions to see where this takes me. He definitely listens.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and here’s wishing you all the best for 2025 😊

Penny, I have read your blog for a long time but never commented. The fashion aspect of it was of slightly less interest to me than your general take on life which I admire, although I do love your style as well. I’m about to turn 66 and this past year due to the loss of my father, ageing has been much on my mind. But like you I’m young at heart and full of ideas for the years ahead. My two sons both got married this year so it definitely is the end of an era in some ways, but also an opportunity to work out who I am now! Oh, my, look how many folks have written to send you best wishes, prayers, love and to encourage you in this new endeavor. You are a treasure. I am delighted to learn that you will be shifting the theme of your writing/blogging from fashion-focused to YOU-centered, the whole of you and not just what you are wearing as I have most enjoyed your recent posts about YOU.

As far as a name or title for your new blog, I prefer the first option. Older, edgy and opinionated – embracing older age. Love the EDGY bit. And as we age, we become more confident, I think, in sharing our opinions.

Don’t care for this one as you most certainly are WISE!!! Older and not wiser – views from the other side of youth
I do like this one but I think the first one is catchier. Looking to the future – views from the frontline of ageing

Anyway, as I understand this post, you will be sharing the URL for your new ‘home’ shortly on this blog. So we should watch this space?? I want to add it to my Feedly feed for the blogs I follow so will be anxiously checking back for that address.

In the meantime, do take care and allow yourself some grace. Hope you will use some of this ‘down’ time to get started on the writing projects you have been eager to begin. Have you ever checked out Substack? I am starting to write there as is Sue and Denyse and Min and Debbie, some of the other gals I follow. You might use that platform for your writing projects.

Awww – how lovely of you to ask. I’m OK, well, you know, OKish, as in, I am fine. I do my Pilates, I do weights, I run around doing household chores. I feel totally normal. And then I go outside and it’s like a force field hits me and, unless I am holding on to an arm, (which I am not leaning on btw) I feel as though I am about to fall over. It’s definitely a perception issue (it’s classic proprioception) and it’s all happening in the neurones and innards of my brain. Definitely. So tomorrow I am back to see my GP (general practitioner) to demand that I see a neurologist. Like your foot it’s soooo frustrating.

Btw, the new blog is coming along nicely – it’s been quite a tricky thing to set up. But I’m hoping to post my first blog early next week. I really missed the writing and I realise it gives me structure and purpose to my week so I shall be blogging as per usual very soon.

How about Older and Edgy – Views from the Other Side of Youth? I like the first part of the one and the second part of the other. I think they sum up what you want to talk about as well as who you are. The thing is you definitely are wiser, Penny. You have this problem, and you’re educating yourself on it. I do wonder if it’s long covid…my husband sometimes wonders if all his problems don’t stem from that. But, as far as I know, he’s never had covid. We locked down tight from the get go.

It is such a bore this balance issue, but the acupuncturist is interesting. I shall go through with several sessions with this therapist as I think he has a lot of valid insight into my situation. It’s getting people to understand is the thing – it’s quite tricky.

Lots of blogs now seem to be about trying not to age, not to have an opinion, conforming to what society thinks us older ladies should be doing and sometimes that’s becoming invisible. Thank you for not being that. I like your attitude to aging and being old. We should discuss it – as you say when you’re younger you think you will never age or be that person.

Happy new year Penny. Good news that you will continue writing. I have stopped reading several blogs over the last year as I have lost some interest in them, but yours is always a must read. I’m delighted that you will continue your political thoughts – they resonate so much with mine – and I know I will find your thoughts on ageing interesting and important. I am a couple of years younger than you, but due to difficult circumstances this past 18 months I am very aware that I have aged a lot over that period. It’s been frustrating but inexorable so I am hoping that things will be more settled in 2025 and perhaps I can age a bit more slowly!

There is always something new out there to grab our attention and inspire us on to greater, perhaps more beautiful things to enrich our life. Hello Penny , well done on making the decision to take your blog in a direction that now reflects you at this stage of life . You are a talented writer and I do hope you complete those projects on the back burner. I quite like the combination of the first two for a blog title . Pity Creative Crone is taken as that is perfect . I must admit I am rather envious that you have your own technical expert in house . (that is what is stopping me from updating my blog , my complete lack of tech skills ).
I have no doubt both your blog and your writing projects will be successful .
I also hope the cataract operation goes smoothly and in time you have answers on your balance problems. Please continue to inspire with your edgy style . All my best wishes, Jill.

Hi Jill, after 11 years it was time to change. And indeed I know I’m very lucky to have Bill by my side (literally, these days) doing the IT stuff – without him things would be very different. I’ll always write a blog, and always do the occasional style post, but do fewer so I have time for other things and other writing. I still love my clothes though!

And yup Creative Crone would have been a magnificent title but I now think a combination of the first two is the way to go.

Re: the cataracts – waiting to see another consultant. Hopefully I’ll be all done by early Spring.

      Thanks Jill 😊

Ohh Penny. What a lovely bunch of subscribers you have. We all love your blogs and whatever you call it we will follow you. I’m not going to repeat what everyone has said. Would just like to wish you a very happy 2025 and best of luck for your cataract surgery: I’m sure it’ll make a massive difference to the quality of life, which I feel is one of the most important things at this stage of our adventure. All the best xx

Hi Christine and I have been totally amazed and humbled by the sheer number of responses – and also the fact that we are all in this together.

Thanks for the good wishes – Ive actually got an NHS appointment in early Feb – wow! So will delay the private pathway and go to that just to see how long I’d have to wait for the actual op.

Onwards and upwards and thanks for coming with me on this adventure 😊

I’m all in favour of the new blog Penny. Not sure about the names though. I’m sure you’ll come up with a catchy title. I loved your frugal fashions blog and I hope you will occasionally update us with a terrific buy, or a particularly good London outfit, but I’m happy to discuss the weird curves that life starts to throw at us more and a more as we get older. I’m 70 going on 71 now and aware that the retirement years aren’t such a doddle any more. Your blog seems to have developed more along these lines now anyway and as a sort of discussion too, which is always interesting to read. I’m not surprised you can’t manage as many editions of the blog as you did and wish you the best of luck with your writing endeavours ( hope we hear something of them too). Happy 2025 and much better health. Trish S

I will definitely update you with my buys and any visits I make to London and elsewhere for exhibitions. Plus some discussion with all of you about how we make the best of the next 10 years! This new blog is part of the writing projects I have so it’s all positive – watch this space. And thank you Trish for reading me over the years 😊

Well, here I am Penny .. late to the call again! Your new direction makes sense – for the reasons you say and as the saying goes, “A change is as good as …etc. etc..”
It’s great to see such a fulsome response from your readers and I like the sound of your new blog, so I hope I can get on the mailing list this time.
At this time in our lives – as you know, we’re the same age – it is important, nah, essential that we use this time wisely – i.e. doing what we find enjoyable and rewarding/fulfilling
A word of defence for Brook Sheilds et al .. she/we (any of us) can only speak from what we know. I was commissioned to write a book on ageing when I was coming up to 50… I eventually wrote one in my early 70s: Ageing with Attitude. It was not the book I had in mind before and would not be the book I’d write today. We can only write where we are/what we know now. And, as you allude to, that can change more or less on the flip of a coin or overnight. For me, falling over in the street early last year, cracking my cheekbone, set me back hugely: it hurt – obvs!! 😉 But it aged me overnight. Instead of striding out, I walk carefully, constantly looking down, and at night, I always hold on to Derek or my companion. Talking of which… going out at night … I do it less and less. And I blush to remember I was puzzled that older people didn’t go out at night – even in ‘safe’ areas. We get to a stage when ‘safe areas’ have to be re-evaluated. This is no bad thing in itself – as, if done well, it will be inclusive, which, in turn, will help everyone. So, in conclusion, all the very best with your new adventure. Love, Mary

Hi Mary and lovely to hear from you. I was always a bit perplexed as to why you were not able to get on to the mailing list as the’ sign-up’ was working for many others joining it. There will be instructions to get on to the new blog both on the FFS blog and the new one – which is still in its embryo stage. I’m still thinking about the title!

Absolutely we all speak from our own particular perspective. I also feel for you in your recovery from falling (not ‘a fall’ – that phrase is so interesting) because it has been a bit of side swipe to suddenly age as I have done this year – I feel, ‘what, moi’????? But I’m using the outraged feeling I have in, I hope, a positive way to be both thoughtful and curious about it all.

Thank you so much for reading me Mary and wishing you and Derek all the very best 😊

Happy New Year to you Penny, in whatever form it takes for you. You have succinctly summed up your reasons for finishing up your frugal fashion blog and your new direction. It all sounds exciting and very you! It’s been great getting to know you via our various blogging challenges and I wish you all the best for however the new blog unfolds. I can see your points of views very clearly and from what you say it is a matter of finding an answer to your issues which is the most important for you at the moment. Take care and I look forward to seeing what you come up in regards to a blog name and direction.

Well done Penny with this blog – it has been a great success. No problem moving on – only you really know what is right. And yes I would like to join the new blog: I presume you will email a new link/joining instructions?
Title – I liked Creative Crone, shame it has gone. I think something like that, two words. Do you want to focus on the age or the opinions? How about Opiniated Olden?
However, am sure whatever you chose will be worth reading.
As someone just turned 69 this is very relevant. I do agree we don’t talk about death enough – it is part of life. I have been very aware of my own mortality since my parents died young-ish. I think there is a lot of fear and so we bury our heads. Friends get surprised and nervy when I talk about booking my burial plot! For me it will be the manner of my exit that I have some anxiety over: cancer, heart, dementia? So have been trying hard to embrace this phase of my life and keep active and healthy, but that will only last so long. And who knows what is round the corner….

So do please keep raising the issues you discuss and all power to your elbow

Yes, the new blog is still in a very embryonic stage and I am still thinking about the title. Actually both your comment and the last one below have really helped as I agree it should be an alliterative two word title with a following statement to explain a bit more about where I am coming from. When it’s ready instructions to get to the blog will go on to FFS for several weeks and on the new blog there will be the usual sign-up/subscription area.

There are very many vitally important issues around ageing that are never discussed including how we leave and exit this life. It is not depressing to talk about this – because i) it’s the reality and ii) it’s interesting. The new name is going to reflect that.

I appreciate everyone’s contribution to this new venture so much – thanks so much Alison for yours 🙂

I’m very late but I want to commend you on your curiosity . Some people are never curious, some are curious to the end . At our age we curious ones are fortunate to have the internet available . So much information. Like you I am curious about the next stage of our lives , I’m just a year younger than you & feel we can learn from each other how best to proceed . There has to be balance . We must take care of ourselves , acknowledge our age & our physical limitations but that doesn’t mean giving up on life & never taking any risks . I don’t see you doing that . I still love putting an outfit together & occasionally bloggers will give me ideas but other things are more interesting now & I look forward to your future posts . How about ‘ The Curious Crone ‘ or ‘ Not Quite Decrepit ?’ 😁 Good Luck .

Wendy I think you are brilliant because as I read your comment I went – oh wow, yay, that is it. So I actually thinking I will take up one of your suggestions – you have been so helpful. Thank you soooo much 🙂

And yes definitely I will include some style posts but it is a positive step to move from ‘shopping’ to a more appropriate stance of hey, how do we negotiate this later stage of our lives.

      Thanks again Wendy 😊

I will definitely sign up for, and look forward to the new blog! Yes, maybe some sort of combination of suggestions one and two. Rather like the second with a question mark – Older and not Wiser? (or even Older and Any Wiser?) Views from the Other Side of Youth.
Not sure I like the word ‘opinionated’ because actually you aren’t! You have strong views on many subjects, much appreciated by your many, many followers, but you are always open to other views and like to look at all sides of an issue. Do hope the acupuncture helps your lack of balance when outside.
    Love, Penny H

Thank you so much Penny for the suggestions. I have been dithering around several!

I’ve just had the 3rd acupuncture session. Acupuncture is so interesting, as is the practitioner who gets the ‘Long Covid’ situation immediately. So instead of a getting a long lecture from my GP about being older I come away so much more confident. In fact afterwards I was walking around Lewes without holding on to Bill’s arm – yay! Onwards and upwards 😊

    Hi Penny,

Yes, I completely get the need to consume less; even if from charity shops or secondhand and understand completely about the blogging. I’ve always enjoyed your posts so will continue to follow and read. I’m so sorry to hear about your balance issues; it sounds quite terrifying.

I have begun to suffer from constant vertigo. I’ve had vertigo for about 10 years now but it only used to last for a day or two; I’ve had it for about the past two months and although it’s improved it’s always there. I have done the exercises and even tried medication but still it stays…damn and blast it!

I look forward to reading your new blog.

Oh my goodness Veronica, vertigo, how horrible. I read somewhere recently that Bob Dylan also has constant vertigo, no consolation though. And here’s just a thought, which of course pleases ignore, but have you tried acupuncture? I was recommended an acupuncturist who has specialised in Long Covid and after 3 sessions I am improving. His approach is by far the more appropriate for me than the GP who said, well as you age…..!

The new blog is still very much work in progress – but it is happening. A new year and a new adventure is how I see it and thank you so much for those kind words 😊

Great post Penny, thought provoking and inspirational, as always.

I love your honesty around ageing. There seems to be this perpetual narrative that if you keep exercising and eating well, your body won’t fail you.

I also hate the word “passing” and always say died! Because that’s what happened.

Looking forward to your new blog. I’ve been going through the same thought process and have decided I’ll do occasional posts about style, mostly using what I’ve already got.

Thank you Gail, yup a bit of honesty and reality is what is needed around the Ageing Well industry. Of course we do need to exercise and continue to exercise and do classes etc along with eating well and taking the right vitamins, but age and an ageing body comes to us all – what then? That’s the key question. Quite excited to be thinking about that rather than the next photo of an outfit.

I am so very glad you are continuing your blog. Yay! Looking forward to reading it. Thanks again 🙂
