Hello everyone

Well, it’s still not quite what I think Autumn/Fall weather should be as it’s quite warm (for the UK) for the time of the year, which on the one hand is good and on the other, maybe not. But I have now got all my winter gear out of storage and I am wearing skirts most days with black leggings of course, plus boots instead of trainers.

Tbh, I can’t wait for winter coat weather as I am obsessed by coats. This is because I live in a small town and we don’t use our car all that much. Instead I either walk into the centre of town or wait for a bus. And going down town is all about being outside rather than wandering around a shopping mall or a big store. Living in this small town we are lucky enough to be able to walk to everything like the bookshops, the clothing shops, the charity shops, even several food shops and a small supermarket. We can also walk to the doctor, dentist, the baker, and the many coffee shops where I meet friends, plus of course, our lovely independent cinema – it’s all walkable. But in the winter, baby it’s cold outside. So, I need a long coat for that kind of life-style. Coats will definitely feature here as the weather gets colder, but this week it is all about my skirts.

And hey everyone, since Monday I’ve been taking part in a #7-day skirt challenge on Instagram, instigated by Gail of Is This Mutton – she does this challenge every year. There’s a link to my Instagram account on the side of this blog (if reading on a PC or Mac) or at the end of this blog (if reading on a phone) if you want to see all the skirts. If you go on it now you will see the 3 skirts I feature below, but thereafter there will be many different skirts and I will be doing the challenge every day for 7-days, and as I have far more skirts than 7, you might even see me continuing the challenge beyond 7 days!

I wear skirts often as I think they are versatile, comfortable and warm in the winter, particularly when worn with thick tights or leggings. I have many different styles of skirts too, but I am loving the full balloon skirts that are around at the moment. I also have many skirts for special occasions, which are not worn as often as they should. I am determined to get them out and wear more of these skirts.

So for this blog here are 3 of the skirts that feature in the 7-day challenge.

This is a skirt I bought simply years ago, and I have no recollection of how much I paid for it, but it wouldn’t have been much. It used to hang off me as, at that time, I’d lost a lot of weight, but now it is a perfect fit.

This is an everyday skirt that I wear out and about in my small town. Note the necklace, and Rieker boots were also bought from a charity shop for next to nothing. The cardi was bought new some years ago and is hand knitted.

Another ordinary skirt that I wear a great deal is this one. It’s gathered at the waist, and is quite a long black skirt.

It goes with so many tops. First, is a selfie in front of my mirror and you can see I’ve paired it with a thin green cardi also charity shopped.

And now my denim jacket.

This skirt was bought new from M&S this summer, but not for very much at £35.

Finally, here is my latest buy. After my holiday I said to myself you are definitely going to buy fewer clothes from charity shops, and you certainly don’t need any more fancy or frothy skirts. But I just happened to pop into a charity shop in a nearby town of Seaford and found this!

It is a simply gorgeous skirt with colourful dots and a tulle overlay.

I think it is great and I will wear it on so many occasions I am sure. Oh and the price?  £6!

That’s all for now, but I just want to say that there were some amazing comments in response to my blog on Schooldays. A very big thank you to everyone who responded and shared their experience of education, private or otherwise. If you haven’t read it do have a read of both the blog, and the comments as these really are worth reading. The blog will particularly appeal to people who went to school in the 50s and 60s! Or are interested in how education used to be years ago!

Until the next time, with love, Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

The spotted skirt has to be the find of the year! I really do intend to wear it out and about – to the cinema and meet-ups for coffee.

Yes don’t wait for a special occasion Vivien – wear what you have right now!

I’ve been enjoying admiring everyone’s skirts: they are so many great ones out there, and I love that I enjoy wearing them nowadays. I didn’t so much when I was younger. I love the close up of the polka dot skirt: I hadn’t realized at first that they were multi colored. I will be sharing all the ones I am sharing on IG in a couple of weeks. It was hard to choose which to share!

That cardi is quite old now but as it’s not worn every day it still looks good. The tulle skirt was such a find!

Hi Penny – this is really frustrating but I am unable to see any of your pictures – have you uploaded them in a different format to usual as I normally don’t have a problem seeing your photos!! 😫😫

I am so sorry Catherine. Actually something different happened this week. The whole blog was sent out in its entirety on the email and I don’t know why that happened. (Btw, I don’t send the email WordPress does.) I suggest you go onto my blog website and I think at the top of the email there is an option to see the blog this way.

So yes, it might be that the email isn’t carrying the photos but they are definitely there in the blog. We will try and send it out the usual way – which is an email with a click to read the whole blog.

I haven’t had anybody else commenting one not seeing the photos but next time I will try to get it sent the usual way.

Love the skirt looks Penny. I am ashamed to say that I only own two skirts. One is a very light summery one and one that can be worn year round which is a dark navy knit. And really only two winter dresses. One is black with polka dots and I save it for serious occasions like funerals. the other is a red and black print. Actually I wore it to a benefit last Sunday. A friend of mine runs a dog rescue organization and held the event in a very nice restaurant, lovely buffet, lots of raffles and prizes, all for a good cause. There must have been 100 people there and only one other person was not wearing pants and suspect this other person wears long skirts for religious reasons although she always looks wonderful. I was surprised by the casualness. That said. I did see many women of all ages wearing dresses during the summer. And actually it feels like summer here in New Yok still. evenings are cooler but during the day one only needs a tee shirt or such. and we badly need rain, It had not rained for weeks I don’t like the cold but this is worrisome. Looking at your photos I can see how I can at least style my one skirt in several ways. I think that I will try this out tomorrow when I meet up with friends for dinner.

Hi Darby and I know, pants/trousers/jeans are worn so often, by so many women, but it is nice to wear something feminine and pretty. I actually find skirts warmer in the winter too, especially when paired with thick tights or leggings. In the summer, if we have one, then I wear a dress as they feel so much cooler.

Yes, I’ve heard that it is still amazingly warm in parts of the States. It’s not that good really, is it? We are soon in to November, and I remember that our November 5th bonfire nights were exceedingly cold nights. You could see your breath coming from your mouth because it was so cold, you dressed up with many layers and you warmed your hands around the bonfire. Not so these days. And yes, this week, even here, I have seen a much younger person wearing just a tee with nothing covering their arms.

Enjoy meeting your friends Darby and thank for contributing to the blog – I really enjoy reading what you have to say 😊

You know, I keep meaning to tell you I actually popped into a charity shop when I was in Ireland this summer. I thought of you immediately. Your charity shops are so much better than our Goodwill stores. We didn’t have a lot of time so I didn’t get to actually look through the racks.

I love that polka dotted skirt, and I’m betting you will find so many different ways to wear it. You just look so chic, edgy, and elegant in it!

I would love to live in a little town like yours. It sounds a dream to me…to be able to do everything you need just by walking to it. Here, in the area where I am, you pay lots of money to live in places like that. But, I can still dream.

Yes, our charity shops are proper boutique-like shops, some are better than others but they all aim to be small, neat and enticing! The polka dot skirt was such a great find!

I would say at least half the population of the UK lives in small towns that are walkable for everything. Even big cities have village-type areas with shops that everyone can walk to. We usually call the main street, the High Street, and it has had a battering what with Covid and then, the higher cost of living, not forgetting the out-of-town supermarkets that draw people away. So it is unusual to find and/or do your main food shop in the High Street, but everything else is walkable. I do think as you get older you do need to be able to walk to the shops, the doctor and the dentist!

It’s a shame that tourists from other countries mainly visit London or the large country houses owned by the aristocracy, and never see how we Brits really live. Same must go for tourists in the States.

      Thanks Marsha 😊

How lovely to live in such a walkable town! We definitely do not… I have a nearly 15 minute walk just to the end of our road to get the mail. Your skirts are lovely.

    Hello, Penny

Your skirts are terrific and very you. All good choices.

Like Vivien, I’m beginning think I should vary my wardrobe rather than live in jeans as an easy option. I do have other clothes, including skirts, in my wardrobe which I could be wearing and honestly, at my age it’s very much a case of ‘If not now, when?’!

Your choices are lovely with the M&S one reminding me of a straight but nicely swirly long skirt I bought in Canada years ago and, ahem, have never worn. (Please don’t tell You Know Who!) I remember the boutique owner saying after I’d bought it, that seeing me walk round in it she’d been struck by the swing in my walk. Crikey! And yet it’s been stuck away in the depths somewhere ever since, still folded up. Having been just treated to some new long winter boots – deep joy – I’m seriously considering fetching it out, adding some thick tights and see how I stack up. I’ll never be edgy like you, but maybe I could work on my swirl!

Thanks for the spur. I may yet dress grown up.

Oh I bet you could look edgy, Zepherine! Actually I love jeans and have just found the best jeans I’ve ever bought plus they are the bargain of the year. More details in the next blog! But I don’t want to wear them all the time. And definitely wear something you’ve actually bought! I know we are all guilty of keeping something either for best or for…. and one doesn’t know exactly what or why. Anyway in the winter always wear skirts with either thick tights or leggings. And just go for it!

      Thanks so much 😊
