Hello again

I’m sending this out a day early as I need some help. It’s time to begin packing my case for the cruise, which starts next Sunday but which frocks shall I take?  I have a few!  Apologies though – what a 1st world dilemma!

Actually, I will show you two lovely dresses I am not taking with me because, oh blast and damnation, my middle has thickened. I am still the same weight I like to be, but my Pilates teacher believes that the two to three months of not doing Pilates (because of flu and Covid) is the culprit. I agree and think that is so. Pilates is really brilliant at keeping you fit and above all else, it help you to work and strengthen your core, and that was definitely neglected in those early months of this year.

Anyway I am not taking this beautiful dress.

I’ve had this dress for 11 years. I wore it on my first cruise in September 2012 and on every cruise since.

But, sadly it now looks far too tight and lumpy around the middle – sigh!

And I’m not taking this one.

This dress is particularly beautiful – see the detail of the strips of material.

I mean I could buy one of those control pants that pull you in, but I think one should be comfortable with what you wear. Those two dresses are now very lumpy around my waist and I will keep them until next year’s cruise and if they still don’t fit I will sell them.

But I am taking this dress which I will call, Dress#1. It is very forgiving around the waist and I do feel a million dollars wearing it!  I bought it in a charity shop years ago and can’t remember for how much but none of the dresses would be over £15, I’d say.  Last worn in August 2019 in those heady pre-pandemic days!

I am also definitely taking this dress, which is dress #2. And I’ve just remembered that this dress was identified as vintage and cost £30 so not every dress was bought at a rock bottom price.

This recent buy below from Emmaus is dress #3

But what about this for dress #4? This is the only new dress in the list of potential cruise dresses.

I rather like the black spotty dress – it’s very comfortable. So that’s dress#5.

It can be dressed up or dressed down. Then there’s this dress, that I’m very fond of and had for simply years.

It used to hang off me (it’s size 16UK) but now it fits beautifully and again, is very comfortable and easy to wear. This is dress #6

Now here’s dress #7, which I bought during the pandemic for a cruise or a party. I’ve not worn it yet and I really want to. But you know what on reflection I don’t think it works. Btw, I tried it with dainty shoes, and, no, so I’m wearing white trainers and I think, no. And I’ve put it on with this little bolero cardi – and no!

And it’s a no for the stole.

I’m thinking it might have to go in the charity shop bag. I mean it could work on a cruise in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, (but not with anything over it) but I haven’t scheduled any cruises in those areas for the foreseeable.  Oh well, never mind, this one I know cost less than a tenner.

Now this dress, #8, I’m in two minds about.

Above, is how I accessorised it when I bought it a few years ago. But I think the dress could be worn with boots.

The boots will be taken anyway as the weather is going to be wet all through the cruise! But what do you think? Is this a bit too goth for a cruise? Should I take it, or instead wear it in the winter at a party?  I’m dithering. But it is my kind of dress though. And that necklace should, of course, be worn outside the dress – my stylists and technical assistants didn’t see to it 🤣

The cruise is 7 nights long, with us returning on the 8th day. So out of the 8 dresses, which should I leave behind?  Having looked carefully at each of the dresses whilst doing this post, I’m thinking it’s dress#7 and possibly dress#8. But what do you think?  I do have a very nice skirt I could take. Or just take 6 frocks and repeat one?

Btw, I can see from the long-range forecast that the weather is dire on most days of the cruise: lots of torrential rain and not that warm. Mind you, I’ll take that over the heat currently in the Mediterranean and the States. Commiserations to any readers suffering under what this Brit thinks must be like living in an inferno. On this cruise that little bolero cardi or any cardi or a shawl of some kind will always be needed during the evening, plus warm woolies and rain gear for the day time!

Two things: It’s been an interesting experience digging into the archive, seeing the dresses worn in previous cruises, and noting how I’ve aged!  And second: I did ask myself, do I regret cutting my hair? But no, I don’t, as the hair always looked good full on, but sideways the hair hung down and dragged my face with it, so it actually wasn’t such a good look for me. But I do think it’s still a work in progress and I rather wonder if I couldn’t go a little further and be more radical. It does grow quickly so I do know it would grow out if I didn’t like it, but I am thinking about a choppier cut. Watch this space!

That’s all for now, and thanks for putting up with this blog as in doing it I have worked out that dress#7 doesn’t work and it is already in the charity shop bag, nevertheless, it would be helpful to me if you said which dress(es) should be left behind. Yes, what about dress#8?  Oh, and should I get the choppier cut before the cruise or after????

With love, Penny,  the Frugalfashionshopper

It’s been an interesting process photographing them and then analysing how they look. I can see that #3 makes me look older. It’s vintage and vintage is a look that suits younger people!!! Seriously it does! I haven’t given up on #7 as it needs working on and #6 always looks good on me – it must be the photo.

      Thanks Jen 🙂

Yes. I hope you’re making progress Penny.. you’ve lots of beautiful dresses to choose from. Btw, I like your hair longer. I think it really suits you.

I also popped back in to see if you or any of your readers know of any similar blogs to yours, for men? My husband is 52 and I was telling him how much your blog has inspired me. I’ve nearly overhauled my while wardrobe for very little cost this year! He has a good eye for fashion but finds most fashion articles for men are about the need for a very expensive statement watch once your over 40 and other such nonsense! 😉

Hi Jen and have a look at this link https://www.billytannery.co.uk/blogs/knowledge/10-must-follow-male-fashion-blogs-in-the-uk

The only one I’ve ever read out of this list is Grey Fox and I do recommend him but he doesn’t use charity shops for his clothes.

Ah yes, the hair look. Actually side on it really dragged my face down. And IRL, my friends have been saying, either ‘oh, so glad you cut your hair ‘and/or ‘it is so much better than when it was long’. Tbh it rather made me wonder what I was looking like!!! I think the thing is front-on yes, but side-on, it was a big no as I’ve seen some photos and I looked awful!

Anyway hope the list is useful 🙂

Does it absolutely have to be a dress for the evenings? What about that fabulous pale mauve frilly tulle skirt you have? I think that wouldbe perfect.

Ah yes, thanks Anne for reminding me – it’s actually in the pile to sell but I might just take it.

Thing is my suitcase is stuffed and SO HEAVY!!!! 🤣 Actually that’s the warm weather gear we are taking, weather isn’t great but I don’t mind as I just love the sea and Norway no matter the weather.

Thanks for that list, Penny.. that looks very helpful and I’ll pass to my hubby. And sometimes getting ideas on looks even if they’re not from charity shops, helps for when you go to the charity shops yourself.

Yes, that’s the thing with photos isn’t it? It’s good to get IRL feedback from all angles!

Happy anniversary and enjoy your break!

I agreee about the ‘hold me in knickers’. I’ve just returned from a cruise and wore them because I too have thickened around the waist this year. Never again- they were hell. I think dress 3 looks a bit severe. The black of the last dress is softened by seeing some skin through parts of it. Enjoy the cruise after all the trials of this year. Like you, I had Covid in early February and took many weeks to get over it. Our cruise was a real tonic.

I bought some of those knickers but I think they would be very uncomfortable so I’m not taking them. Funnily enough I think #3 makes me look older. It’s vintage with a classic look that can look amazing on younger people, but somehow, looking at it closely, it’s a no. I shall sell it.

And yes, how I am looking forward to the cruise! Thanks Lindy 🙂

I like dress no 8 with boots the best. Didn’t like it much with shoes as the paler legs breaks it up too much. I love the goth look and you look younger. Love the new haircut too.

I sympathise about the waist. I’ve lost a stone in the last year but my waist remains a 34”. Even the Pilates doesn’t seem to help. But I’m going to France twice a year now and doing a lot of swimming so hopefully that will.

Love to you and husband. Did I see you were bank at Hillcrest film club now?

Thanks re: the advice about dress #8 I will take it on the cruise! And thanks for the kind words about the hair – it took some courage as it’s been one length and long for ages. Ah the waist situation – I think exercise is the key. Love the fact you’re going to France twice a year.

I will email you about the Hillcrest. Thanks Umi 🙂

Hello, Penny…I do like #8 with the boots and believe that the way you styled it more sheer on top looks lovely. That said, I think it would be great for the Holidays and, perhaps, left behind…unless you have a more dressy affair in the evening on the cruise.
Regarding the haircut…do you want the adjustment period to be during the cruise? On the other hand, if the shorter do will be easier to style, by all means, cut it. I find that the grayer my hair grows, the more “current” I want my haircut to be.
As you head out on a lovely cruise, I am heading into the mountains! I daesay my fashion needs will be quite different! 😉

The cruise I am going on has 2 formal nights where the men wear bow-ties and those pin-tucked shirts and the womenwear long dresses. The other nights are smart casual but everyone on this particular cruise-line dresses up every evening, which I love!.

I will leave the hair for the moment – you’re right I’m still adjusting to how it is right now!

Enjoy your time in the mountains with your family – it will be lovely. Thanks Charlene 🙂

Great blog today Penny. I love #8 with boots – so a big YES to that one. Also yes to a choppier haircut. As you say if it grows quickly and you don’t like it, you can grow it out. Of all the dresses I like 6 and 7 least, so those would be the ones I left behind.
Have a wonderful holiday and hope you both come back fighting fit. Kathy x

        Hi Linda

I am taking dress 8 but actually leaving behind 4 dresses as this has been such a useful exercise – to really look at the dresses. So, not dresses 2&3 as it’s the usual vintage situation. I get seduced into buying these as they look so glam but IRL they are glam on younger people and I think they make me look older than I’d like to look. And not dress 4 as it’s too much of a day dress and daywear will be a thick jumper and wellies what with the weather in Norway which isn’t actually much different to how it will be in Lewes.

But three cheers I am taking that first dress as I tried it on again and it fits!!!

And enjoy your cruise in September! Thanks Linda 🙂

I shall take dress #8 – thanks! I haven’t given up on dress 7 but it needs work on it and if it’s not been worn by next year then out it goes. It’s funny how many people did not like dress 6, and yet it swishes and rustles – the material is lovely. Think I might not take dress#4 as the more I look at it I see it as a day dress and it’s going to be too wet and cool for that. Norway has all our wet weather and more!!! But it will be lovely and relaxing to get away and visit that lovely country.

      Thanks Kathy 🙂

I hope you don’t have to get rid of the first two dresses as they are stunning. Re your current choice, I like 4&5 or 4 or 5, as you never know, the weather might change and these are good for evening or going out during the day. They look comfortable too. Dress 1 and dress 6 would also look good with your current hair, and I’m sorry to disagree but I also like dress 7 with your current haircut, though I wouldn’t like it if you had much longer or shorter hair (does that sound weird). I also like dress 8 with the boots but not without. In fact I do think dress 8 looks more cold weather and needs lots of red to perk it up. Re haircut, it’s what you like that counts and we all need a bit of a change sometimes. Have a wonderful cruise and I hope the weather is better than expected.

Those two dresses are the best – I need to work on my Pilates and that might help. We’re going on a longer cruise next year and I hope to wear them then.

The weather throughout is cool and wet!!! So I won’t be wearing a dress out and about. That’s Norway for you albeit the Jet Stream is working that way for both the UK and Norway – the last time we went to Norway (in 2019) it was boiling hot!

Thanks you so much Trish 🙂

        Hi Anne

Oh wow, it’s been such good exercise in really looking at the dresses – decision is I’m not taking 2&3 as they’re too vintage and look (as they should) old. And not dress 4 as it’s a day dress and day wear will be jumpers and wellies as it’s raining practically every day in Norway but no different to back home where it’s raining every day as well! Not 7 for the reasons I gave – it doesn’t work. But wonder of wonders I am taking that first dress as I tried it on again and I think it fits me. So that’s great!

        Thanks Anne:)

Hello Penny, I agree with you on both 7 and 8. The black does look better with the black tights under the sheer. Best of luck with your decision. As for your hair I do like it shorter, and a more layered style would work beautifully.

I am now not taking dresses 2&3 because they’re vintage and look a bit ‘old’ on me and not 7 for all the reasons I gave, it just doesn’t work, or 4 as it’s a day dress and we will be wearing, thick jumpers, wellies and raincoats every day I think 🤣 Mind you it’s the same weather back in Lewes according to the weather forecast. But three cheers I am taking that first dress that I couldn’t get into – tried it on again and I think will be fine.

These are lovely especially the sweetheart neckline from Emmaus. The only one I don’t find flattering is the one with the bolero and shawl. You’ll be the bees knees.

Weather not too bad in Nice, it’s 30 and 25 overnight but we are sleeping well. Out in the morning, Tour de France in the afternoon then out in the evening again. No AC which we are hoping to avoid installing as we can’t stand the hum.
Shutters or thermal curtains are great.

I always feel bereft when the Tour de France finishes – we watch yesterday’s highlights the next morning instead of the news! It was exciting to see that rivalry but I was so sorry that Mark Cavendish hd to leave because of the fall he had. I believe he has been offered a contract for next year. I do hope he accepts it and has another try.

Gosh those are high over night temps – not sure I could sleep in that heat. And it’s been an interesting process looking at the photos – I shall try on the first two once more to see if the lumpiness is still there 🤣

So here is my two cents. I like dress #1,and also #3. dress #4 will be good for excursions, not for formal nights. The black spotted dress looks like a dress I have traveled with in the past. you can dress it up or down. actually for me it was the only dress I packed for a two week cruise back in 2019. The red dress, I think #2 is very pretty but to me it is autumnal or holiday ish. perfect for a Christmas party. but that’s just me. #6 is also for me a winner. I agree that I would not bring #7 but clearly I am in the minority about #8. Just too much going on there. All that said this is clearly my own taste talking and you look good in all of them. Just enjoy every moment!

Hi Darby and thanks for going through all the dresses – I’m actually leaving four of them behind!!! Not 2&3 as they’re vintage and they’re not quite right for me. Not dress 4 as it’s a day dress and daywear has to be warm and wooly – the temperatures are lowish and there’s lot of rain, in fact, the same weather as back home! And not 7 for all the reasons I gave. But wow, and three cheers I tried that very first dress on again and I do fit it now – so it’s coming with me! So glad as have had it since 2012!

I’m going to start with your hair. Do you have enough time to figure out how to style it with a new cut? It always seems to take me a bit to figure it out.

As for dresses, I’m not sure because I’ve never been on a cruise. I love dress 8 with the boots! I think you would make a grand statement at dinner in it! As for the red dress, it reads as more a day time dress to me. But, perhaps you need those, too? I would also take dress 6 because it looks like you can dress it up and down. I don’t think I’m helping much here!

I can’t wait to see the photos from your cruise!

You’re so right – I’m still adjusting to this new hair cut right now. So will leave a more radical cut until after the cruise.

A cruise is lovely if you avoid the nasty blocks of flats on a pontoon type of ship. I can’t think anything worse. This cruise line has two ships with under a 1000 people – that’s enough for me. And on this line we dress up every night but dress up big time on 2 formal nights. I wouldn’t choose a cruise line where everyone stayed in shorts!!!!!

But this has been such a useful exercise. I am now not taking four of them! Not 2&3 as they’re vintage – they’re lovely in their own right but I have decided not on me. Not dress4 either as it’s day dress and daywear will have to be warm as it’s cool weather with lots of rain – not any different to back home actually! And not dress 7 for all the reasons I gave. But three cheers I am taking that first dress as I tried it on again and it fits now!!!! So pleased as it’s accompanied me on all my cruises since 2012, that’s one every year apart from the Covid years.

Thanks Marsha, I shall put lots of photos on Instagram. You take care 🙂

I’m absolutelywith you on that. Dress 3 is made to look like a vintage dress but if you buy it new they’re around £100, so to find one for £10 – I was seduced by the bargain, but on reflection it is not a good look at all!

I’ll leave my hair for the moment as I’m still adjusting to its current cut!

    Morning Penny
Thanks for this parade of dresses. What fun!
I like dress 8 with the black tights (boots or the slippers).
And if you’ve still got dress 7 I think its worth trying with black tights too – and the black bolero.
    I’m less keen on 4 and 5.
I prefer the slippers to the black sandals.
I definitely prefer you hair short and yes, do try it shorter, choppier… but not until after the cruise (in case you don’t like it and it spoils your holiday.)
I’m struck that you feel the need to take a different dress for each evening. That would be hell for me: I find packing SO stressful.
We’ve only been on one cruise, QM2. I did a mix and match job with clothes and accessories/shoes which worked for me.
You didn’t say where you’re cruising but wherever you’re going, have a great time, and I look forward to hearing more in due course.

Hi Mary, unfortunately the black slippers went into the charity shop bag as they were excruciatingly painful – my feet seemed to have changed shape just like my waist!!!

We’re going to Norway again! Love that country as much as France! The weather is forecast to be cool and wet!

It’s been an interesting experience looking and analysing the photos. I see that dress 4 is more of a day dress so I won’t be taking it. Neither will I take dress 3 as I can see it is far too old a look for me, it’s too classic and looks as though it’s been in the back of my wardrobe for years. That’s the problem with vintage – it would be lovely on a younger person, but it’s a no for me. Dress 5 can be dressed up beautifully so I will be taking it.

I always take a dress for every night as I absolutely love collecting these dresses – and I will just try on the first two I had decided not to take as they are the best of the bunch. I start to pack tomorrow. Like you I do find packing a bit of a marathon but I start early!

I shall get my hair cut again after the cruise – I’m still adjusting to how it is right now!! Thanks Mary 🙂

    Hello Penny,
I haven’t commented before but have read your blog with interest for a couple of years and now also follow some of your links.
I love the black dress with the boots, it’s a real statement and it is true to your vision. I like your edgier more ‘street’ clothes best.

      Hi Pamela and hello!

Thanks so much, I am taking that dress, but so thankful for the exercise of really looking as I am now not taking dresses 2&3 – too vintage. Not dress 4 as it’s a day dress and daywear will be winter woolies 🤣 And not dress 7 for all the reasons I gave. But three cheers I can now get into that very first dress – tried it on and it fits me!

You’re right, I look better when dressing a bit edgier. Thanks again 🙂

I would not wear 4 in the evening but I’m known to overdress at every opportunity! You identify the problem with vintage for us older women ; it looks like you’ve had it forever. I usually have a dress for every evening unless it’s a very long cruise as I have to justify having bought the many that I have! Not keen on the lace one with the short lining, not sure why they do this. Just got the photos from daughter’s wedding, lovely I shall be boring all my friends with them. I think my cardigan/jacket was too tight in the sleeves on reflection & that the MOG looked nicer than me but my hired hat was stylish anyway! Of course my face is lopsided because of the cancer treatment but the swelling under my chin has reduced even more in the last 6 weeks which is good. Feeling well but liver enzymes playing up a bit. Hope you have a really lovely cruise , very envious of course. Bon Voyage!

Hi Lynda – I have decided not to take dress 7 and also dress 4 as I can see it is too daytime for me. Also dress 3. You absolutely nailed it re: vintage! Mostly I avoid vintage like the plague but this brand sells new vintage at exorbitant prices and I was totally seduced by the price (£10) when I know that they usually sell at near £100! I always tell people not to be bamboozled by a bargain but there I was buying it!!! It’s lovely but i) it’s too big and ii) it is just too classic and not really me. The one that is absolutely me is the lace one with the half slip, and I was just hesitating but have decided it is a dress that dresses you up! Like you I don’t dress down on these trips. I’m just like you, I like to take a dress for every evening except when it is a longer cruise.

I’m glad everything is settling down – fingers crossed about the liver. And your daughter’s wedding sounds as though it was just lovely as you were Lynda I’m sure. One day I’m hoping that my son might get married – they have two children, one only 4 months, but I do think they might marry and I will be MOG. My daughter has a lovely relationship with her partner and has a son aged 17 – they will never marry though. How vain of me but I’m longing to dress up and wear a hat!!!

Thanks Lynda, and yes, I am looking forward to the cruise – the first since the pandemic 🙂

I am figuring it out a lot more than before and am leaving behind another two! These are dresses 3&4. And why? It’s the vintage problem again. A vintage look is fantastic on someone who is young but in my age group it looks as though you’ve kept this old-fashioned dress in the back of your wardrobe – and it just looks old!!!

And yay and three cheers I can get into the dress at the very beginning of the blog – still not taking the second one, but Ijsut reduced my helpings for a week and my middle area has deflated 🤣

      Thanks Mireille 🙂

I can see why you asked for help; you have so many lovely dresses to pick from! If it were me I’d probably leave out dress #8 and then maybe dress #4 or 5? Honestly, you do look lovely in them all and whichever ones you pick you’ll have a wonderful time.

Thanks Joanne. I’ve just returned from the cruise and worked out what I should take next time!

I love dress 8 because it’s the epitome of your style, and it looks less goth with the black tights.
All your dresses look fabulous – the only one I was less keen on is the one you’re struggling to style. It needs a pair of sandals I think.
I know what you mean about Pilates, I notice such a huge difference with my middle when I’m doing it regularly.
Hope you have a wonderful holiday x

Dress 8 will be kept and worn when I meet up with like-minded people. If it wasn’t November I might wear it when we meet Jill. Perhaps I should work out how to wear it in cold weather. However, on a one Formal night cruise it was too much for the other Smart Casual nights, so I didn’t wear it!!!

Will think about how I can wear it at home! Thanks Gail 🙂

I love the first two dresses. We all change shape a bit over the years but I bet the pilates will make a difference. I have to work much harder now on my core muscles – both for tone and to keep the back pain away. Dresses 4 and 5 are lovely too, they look very light and floaty. I hope you have a wonderful time!

I left dresses 4&5 behind and now know I should have taken them, as they would have worked very well for Smart Casual nights. But I took dress 8 and didn’t wear it at all! That was because it was just too goth for a cruise 🤣 I won’t get rid of it though as I want to find occasions when I can wear it.

    Thanks Emma 🙂
