A new skirt and an even shorter hair style!

Hi everyone

The weather’s much cooler and calmer. We’ve even had some rain and three cheers as that means my water butts are full again. I did some gardening yesterday and everything is greener and more moist – phew, it’s such a relief.

However, even with my shorter hair, during those horrible hot days the new hairstyle was touching my collar and that made me feel as though I was wearing a woollen scarf around my neck so, at the end of last week off I went to the hairdressers, and this is my new hairstyle.

That’s me screwing up my eyes in an attempt to see what I’m doing without my glasses! Here I am with glasses.

And here I am wearing a new charity shop find, an Arket skirt, bought for £10 in Kemptown’s Age UK chazza shop. Yes, we went back to Brighton to have my 1-2-1 at my Personal Trainer’s studio instead of via Zoom. I must say while I was in Brighton I felt that moving to Lewes was right for us, but that charity shop I’ve just mentioned is something else and really is the best as I got two other items that you’ll see soon.

.

The skirt is very comfortable to wear.

I also went to Bravissimo (walking along the seafront to get there) which for those of you who don’t know is a specialist bra shop where you get measured properly and are served by lovely young women who are usually quite busty!  I must say their standard of service is very high and they do their utmost to find the best bras for you. You can also order online, which is what I did during the lockdown, but gosh it was about time I got measured in person as I’ve gone up a size.

I’m sure you are all aware that a good bra is absolutely essential to prevent all sorts of things. Now, I’m hoping this isn’t too much information, but I’m well beyond worrying about sagging breasts as mine, hey, without a bra they’ve walked right down to my waist, but a good bra does give one a better shape. A well-fitting bra will also support from underneath as well as just relying on the straps and I have stopped getting that red mark on my shoulders with this new buy. I mean, comfort is all, so I shall be ordering two more when the next pension comes in!

The Brighton outing was nice as I’m kind of feeling that we are getting back to some normality, for example, I felt OK going into a small cubicle with the young woman. Also had lunch out but no photos as I was very much in the moment of enjoying my trip to Brighton.

And now with a jacket.

The jacket is another charity shop find bought some years ago, so I can’t remember for how much, not a lot I’m sure.

That’s all for now, hope you’re all enjoying the weather and the late summer months wherever you are.

With love, Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

Before you mentioned the new bra I noticed your shape had changed in the chesty area.. a lesson for us all.
I’ve been bra-less for over 20 years and though I’m in need of the uplift can’t bear the feeling or the look of hoisted breasts when looking down.

I absolutely get what you’re saying. I’m afraid I have those larger boobs that older women get and I expect them to continue increasing!! In my youth I used to go bra-less and even after breast feeding twice I could wear nothing but a vest, but now they reach to my waist and are quite heavy and uncomfortable without support ( I bounce and look an odd shape) so I really want to wear a good bra and the ones I ordered in the lockdown were getting tighter and more uncomfortable – the new one feels good. The white tee is probably not the thing to wear as it makes the bra quite obvious. but was so pleased to find it.

      Thanks for commenting 🙂

    Morning Penny
Yep, I agree with previous comments – your hair’s great. And I like the jacket-skirt combo.
Thanks also for the steer on your new bra. I’ve been struggling with recent bras from M & S.
Still can’t get attached to trainers; being an ex-Essex girl, it’s a step too far 😉
    All the best, Mary x

Thank you Mary, the heat got to me, but glad to have cut my hair like that.

M&S do not cater for older women. Bravissimo is just the business as it measures under your bra and then caters for all cup sizes. I am 32 (under the bra) G. I’m sure you wouldn’t get that in M&S. Also the young woman who measures you will go back and forwards until you find the right one. She will also adjust your straps and just look at the bra you put on and know if it’s right for the size of your boobs. The bras are a typical price as well and not expensive. Highly recommend.

All the best to you too x

Hi Penny, The hairstyle is lovely , soft and pretty but still smart. Is it layered or all one length? I keep having layers cut into in mine and it’s so straggly I must do something! Good advice re bras, M and S only seem to go for underwiring and padding, do we really need padding if we are over a size 34 ,I don’t think so! I will certainly visit Bravissimo . Best wishes Judy from Brighton

Thank you re: the hair, Judy, and it’s not layered but quite bluntly cut but underneath the line of hair my hairdresser has removed lots of that hair that grows from your neck. She is amazing and I am so pleased to have found her. It’s Langtons in Lewes, in case you think you might venture there and her name is Amber.
And I wonder if you are really over a size 34. Bravissimo measures under your bra so I am a 32 there and then I am a G cup. I’m sure in M&S I’d be trying a size 38 on!!! Furthermore, the assistant will go back and forth with many different bras until she finds the right one for you. She will also adjust the straps and generally see what suits your particular size of boob as we are all different. I highly recommend as they’re not overly expensive either. It’s best to make an appointment and there’s nice seating to wait for your ‘girl’ to take you to a cubicle.

Best wishes to you too, Judy 🙂

Big Tick for new Hairstyle – a good move for you. Has given you a new look!
Well done. Wish I had the patience to ‘blow dry’ – I now only want to ‘wash and go’. So I keep my hair VERY short, finger dry it, wax it and go!
I envy you your local Charity shops – we have plenty here, in a market town in Herefordshire, but rarely see anything ‘classy’ now.

PENNY I USE BRAVMISSIMO AS WELL AND ORDER ONLINE AS WELL I DO NOT THINK I NEED TO BE MEASURED AGAIN BUT WILL BEAR THAT IN MIND WHEN COOLER WEATHER ARRIVES
I LIKE YOUR HAIR YOU ARE BRAVE BUT WHAT THE HELL USED TO HAVE VERY SHORT HAIR AND I MEAN SHORT BUT SINCE LOCKDOWN HAVE GROWN MINE NOBODY REALLY LIKES IT BUT I DO!!!!!

Bravissimo is just wonderful and it’s so good to be measured and waited upon like they do – their service standards are very high.

Yes, I’ve gone quite short in contrast to the long hair I’ve had for several years, but I am used to changing my hairstyles as over the years I’ve had so many styles. My other half I think slightly prefers the longer hair but he is reconciled to my many changes!!!

Even with the good charity shops near me I reject up to 95% of their items in store. I walk out empty-handed most days, it’s only occasionally I find the one that I want. Good luck with the hunt!

      Thanks Ellie re: the hair.

I definitely can’t go bra-less and I am lucky to still be near Bravissimo as the last time I went to M&S they had many bras but none with the cup size I needed and no-one around to help if you wanted another bra to try on. In Bravissimo you have your personal assistant from the start and they go back and forth with the bras until they get you the right one. I shall continue going to them for ever and order online when I can’t, as I did through lockdown, that’s when you could have a personal consultation via Zoom or just the phone. They have amazing high service standards and the bras are just ordinary prices. It’s brilliant X

Great new hairstyle Penny. I think shorter hair ‘lifts’ the face. I don’t wear skirts any more as I don’t like the feeling around my thickened waist. Bras are difficult to buy as I find underwiring uncomfortable now and I don’t like seams showing through clothes. Tricia from LFF did a good video with a bra shop owner who explained that the more expensive brands have flexible wiring which is not uncomfortable like the cheaper brands – you get what you pay for in bras apparently. Just lost a big chunk of tooth at lunch so visit to Dentist later today – such fun! Another problem of aging unfortunately. Went up to London with daughter and granddaughter yesterday to see a show. So many people………………just not used to it now. Don’t think I’ll be doing that again any time soon. Wore mask and hoping for the best!

Hi Lynda and yes I agree it’s quite the face lift which as you would imagine I am pleased about. Bras can be tricky especially as you get older and have the older woman with large breasts syndrome which is what’s happening to me! Bravissimo is such a boon as the bras are not expensive but their standard of service is amazing. It’s best to make an appointment although I have done walk-ins and you get a personal assistant from the start who measures you, or sometimes, would you believe it, just looks at you, and then they go back and forth with many bras until you get the right one, they also help to adjust the straps – I honestly wouldn’t know what to do in M&S!

Ah dentists, as unbelievably, I have just broken a tooth off my plate (had the same one for nearly 20 years) which wasn’t fitting as well as it should lately, and going to the dentist today. I foresee a lot of expense coming up!

I know what you mean about London, but museums and art galleries are less crowded and therefore less claustrophobic to me than a theatre audience. I just wouldn’t like to sit next to someone. That’s why I can cope with cinemas better as going in the afternoon it’s never crowded.

Still wearing a mask in crowded supermarkets, and in anywhere crowded really. Fingers crossed for you, I’m sure you’ll be fine. All the best to you Lynda 🙂

Your hair is so lush and thick, I thought the longer style was lovely, but you look fantastic with the new cut. I swear you look younger. My hair is thinning drastically in the front and have just had a new cut to release some of the curl all around. Oh how I wish we had some great thrift/charity shops like the ones you find. I do get a few items, and I guess I really don’t need much but it is fun to discover hidden gems.

Thank you Diane for those kind words, all that hair is down to my mother and I do thank her for that! And good to hear you’ve had a new haircut. That’s the way to deal with thinning hair – good hairdressers are worth their weight in gold. So pleased I’ve found this one.

The thing is even with good charity shops I mostly walk out empty-handed and reject 99% of their stock. But the hunt is fun, isn’t it!

      Thanks again 🙂

Yes, depends on your local case numbers and how well ventilated the shops are. All our thrift/charity shops are small and usually the door is open. Wearing a mask will help.

      You stay cool too 🙂

Thanks for those kind words about the hair and the skirt.

In every town we used to have those large department stores with bra departments that had women who measured you. They’ve gone now but the chain Bravissimo is wonderful and I’m so lucky to be near one in Brighton. You can walk-in or make an appointment and there’s nice seating while you’re waiting for them escort you to a cubicle, then you’re measured and they then go back and forth with loads of bras until you’re happy, and she’s happy, that it fits exactly. The experience is so good and the bras, amazingly, are not expensive.

Stay cool, Michelle and thanks again 🙂

Ah yes the growing out the colour. Took me two years at least but that’s because I kept it long, going shorter will perhaps in a way, make the process shorter. It’s a lengthy business but I’m sure you’ve decided, like I did, that it was time and was it worth it, yes it was!

Your new hair cut looks fantastic, Penny! Over the years my hair has got shorter and shorter but never actually short. I always say to my hairdresser that when he cuts my hair, it equates to a face lift.
We’ve still not had much rain in Surrey and recently had three days without any water at all. Since we visited Cape Town, where droughts are too common place, I like to think I have been very mindful about our water usage. In the hotels and Airbnb’s in CT, we were provided with buckets to put in the shower to catch the ‘grey’ water. It’s a habit I’ve maintained ever since.
I’ve got tickets for the exhibition you saw in Dulwich – can’t wait to go!

Thank June and yes, it really is like having a face lift, so may keep it like this for some time. I do like a change though so will try not to get bored with it!

Oh , were you in one of those places that had no water – read about it in the media, how awful. Yes, in the worst of the heat when our water butts had run out, I was obsessed with saving ‘grey’ water and bought a big black bucket for the shower. Not doing that so much, but it is simply amazing how much water we’re getting from just washing our hands – that now flushes the loo.

Enjoy the exhibition. It is such a nice gallery!

      Thanks Nancy re: the hair.

I’d say that Kemptown is a great place to wander around. It’s flat and has great shops.

Don’t make for St.James Street because despite the many charity shops it’s on a hill and it’s a bit scuzzy. Go to St.George’s Road which has many lovely little independent shops and two charity shops as well, including the wonderful Age UK charity shop where I bought the skirt and a really great dress. It also has many independent coffee shops where you can either eat outside or in. Below is the link to a google map for it.

You can also park the car on the seafront road, Marine Parade, fairly easily and in other roads nearby but not actually in St Georges Road. So park in Marine Parade and go up Burlington Street and walk along St.Georges Road – it’s all happening there!

    Hi Penny
That new haircut is wonderful on you! I am glad you are getting enough rain but we are not. I truly looked forward to awakening to the promised heavy rain this morning but not to be, perhaps a stingy hour of moderate rain at midday, then overcast but not another drop. I walked the shelter dogs this morning, then went to the local farm for eggs and ingredients to make a roasted ratatouille, a Summer favorite. John, the farmer is of course very concerned with the dry season, they have already lost a number of crops. I drove home past a small local river which is barely a trickle. So distressing. yesterday I spent the afternoon with a group of women friends who are all involved in animal rescue, especially dogs. My friend , Monique hosts these get together which she calls rose Sundays, as the rose wine continues to flow, as well as delicious food but then she is French so perhaps not a surprise. So although no away vacation the Sumer has been enjoyable, if worrisome, with the pool, concerts in the park and of course seeing friends regularly.
for years there used to be a lovely women’s lingerie shop near my Daughter’s apartment. I have gone there in the past, wonderful service but sadly gone. I tried another shop, actually nearer to me which has lingerie and sportswear but although the women tried to be helpful I ended up purchasing a few garments which really did not work and of course you can’t return them. I like your skirt. I bought a solid skirt last year, navy, thinking I could wear it with many of the tops in my wardrobe and for some reason I have not worn it much. maybe I am just so used to wearing pants. I actually have been making an effort to wear more dresses this summer.
I am happy that you are enjoying the new home and that the weather has become more seasonal. that’s it for now, the kitchen buzzer just went off so I need to check on the veggies. Darby X

Thank you as ever Darby and while the weather is much cooler the rain is still insufficient to fill our reservoirs which are very low in the south of England. But I am loving the temperatures.

I do admire your hands on work with dogs. Whenever I feel a little overwhelmed about the news (which is universally ghastly, I think) I turn to Facebook where a platform known as the Dodo shows nothing but short films about dog rescues. A lot of them come from the States and the breed, pitbulls or pitties as they’re usually called. Despite their massive jaws they do seem to be absolute softies and it’s so delightful to see these dogs change when they get a loving home. The get-togethers sound really nice.

Every town even small towns used to either have a department store or a small lingerie store with women who would measure you but those have all gone. Bravissimo is one of a kind now although I expect some big stores in London might still do it. It’s the service you get which is so wonderful with the young assistants going backwards and forwards with different bras until you get the right one.

I too am wearing more dresses and think it’s the hot weather plus a different town – women in Lewes are wearing those milkmaid dresses, which has encouraged me to wear mine!

Enjoy your life in New York, Darby it’s always great to get your news X

Love your shorter hairstyle, Penny! It’s really flattering for your pretty face!
Glad to hear that the weather has cooled. Last week, we had to travel back to our old stomping grounds. We left our home in the late morning, with temps in the mid-70’s F (mid-20’s C) and, one hour later, arrived near our old locale with 103F (39.4C). Whew! It’s been three years since our move and, like you, we are still delighted and so thankful!
Looking great in that skirt and white tee outfit! Looks cool and comfy. Adding the jacket is great!
Yes, regarding bras…in my book, a necessary evil! But my sister recently suggested a bra from True and Co. Its a one-piece bra that is put on over-the-head. I am not well-endowed so this style works well for me…and it is comfortable!
Learned something new! In your last post I had to look up “water butt”. Now I understand what it is and how it is used in your garden. Same thing when I first read “jumper” in That’s Not My Age.
Take care, Penny. Enjoy your new hairdo! Charlene

Thank you Charlene for the kind words about the hair and skirt, it was about time I had a more stylish cut.

Yes, the weather has cooled which is so much nicer but while I don’t want it to rain all the time what we’ve had is still insufficient for our reservoirs to start filling up.

Wow, parts of the States are sooo hot!

Bras are so very necessary for larger breasts which I’ve definitely got now, and are not always the best thing, as the shape can be a bit much sometimes, hence the need for a well fitting bra, which fortunately I’ve got now! Bravissimo is just wonderful with its high levels of service, so nice to have a branch of it nearby.

I know our language is the same but not always!

Thank you Charlene and you take care too 🙂

Super hairdo and lovely skirt – I think the informality of the skirt goes. Ery well with the slightly more formal jacket! Xx

I had to chuckle that your breasts have taken a stroll downward! I always say mine are depressed and always looking at the floor! I absolutely love your new hair cut! It’s so chic and gorgeous! I’m guessing you have the kind of hair that grows quickly (I don’t know why I think this, but I do)! I’m so glad you feel a bit of normalcy in your life. It feels a bit more normal here, too. I’m just kind of waiting for the next shoe to drop…do you think we will ever escape that feeling? Oh, I do hope we make it back to the UK someday. I’d love to come to Brighton or Lewes! I’ve always read about the seaside at Brighton and imagine it to be so lovely!

Oh yes,, the boobs are way down without support, but the new bra is helping! Thanks re: the hair, it was about time to get a more stylish cut and I thank the new hairdresser for that – she is such a find.

Yes, here too cases are beginning to drop, some normalcy has returned but will we ever lose that slight feeling of tension? Not for a long time, I think,

You’d love Lewes, it is so full of beautiful buildings and history. Brighton is completely different and isn’t what I’d call pretty also the beach is just stones, no sand! But it is a fun place.

      Thanks 🙂

Hello Penny, the new shorter hair is just lovely on you , so flattering. The skirt was a good find , so versatile . Your charity shops do seem to carry much better stock than the ones here.
Agree that having a bra fitted by experts is always so much better than buying off the rack.
Glad you are feeling more confidant about being out and about again. There has been an increase in Covid cases here over the Winter but is now decreasing.
Stay well and enjoy the final days of Summer.

I know, it’s been quite the face lift! The skirt was a great find too! Bra fitting is essential as it’s the measuring that is so important.

That Omicron variant got everywhere as cases increased here in the summer quite a bit, but it’s waning now, thank goodness.

You stay well too and it must be Spring where you are now – enjoy!

You hair looks great – flattering and fashionable. I’m having mine cut today (out of cycle) – shorter ! The skirt is a brilliant find, love it with the jacket. Good to hear you’re back to real-life Pilates. I’m doing it at least twice a week now thanks to you.

Pilates is great isn’t it, the muscles I’ve got as a result! Also the 1-2-1 gets me going with weights – so necessary at my age to build muscle and use resistance.

Thanks for your kind words about the outfit and hair. Now I’ve gone short it’ll stay that way – until I get bored that is!!!

Hello! Gorgeous skirt and really fabulous hair. I went for a bra fitting for the first time in years a few months ago as our local M&S has closed, and discovered I’ve been wearing the wrong size bras completely. I mean SERIOUSLY the wrong size, so now I’ve been properly fitted and ye gods it’s made a difference. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Ruth

I know, Ruth, it’s amazing, this sizing business. If I had stuck with M&S I would be going for something like 38C, but with Bravissimo’s measurements I am a 32G! I mean never ever would I be looking at the 32s!!! And it’s the service you get at Bravissimo that I find so good, the way the assistant just stays with you until you get the right size! It’s brilliant.

And thanks for the kind words about the hair and skirt 🙂

    Hi Penny,

I read all the comments and that was fun. Oh, how they make me want to see all of the wonderful places in the U.K., especially by car with someone else driving so I wouldn’t miss a thing.

Well, now you know that your readers all love your new haircut. There is a saying, “Start with the ‘why'” so allow me to comment a little more clinically than others have. I was in the cosmetic business for many years and did private consultations, especially about makeup after analyzing facial structure. (Dealing with our bodies truly is all about proportions, right? Even the many comments and observations about keeping “the girls” in place. Oh my, is that a topic for discussion as the years go by?)

So, as I see the ‘why’ in the case of your lovely face, as far as your haircut goes, it works so well to make a horizontal line, not a vertical one as your long straight hair did. This really is a flattering length for you. You can still do other styles with this length and that will keep things interesting, but believe us all when we say, it is the most flattering one for your face shape.

I have a friend with similar hair and she uses two large rollers for the front of her hair by her ears. She pops them in, puts on her makeup, and by the time that is finished, she takes them out. The result creates a slight c-shape by her ears so then her earrings show and, in your case, it would give even more of a lift and maintain the horizontal line that is so good for you.

Here in Ecuador, quite by accident, I stumbled onto a hair salon and a woman who knew exactly how to get my longish heavy hair to fly in formation. I have to wear it back because random hairs land on my clothes otherwise, but people say it is a classic look with my salt and pepper locks and it is super easy now that it bends the way I want it to.

I like the classic look you achieved with your new skirt and jacket. What fun to know just where to go to find the goodies! And, it keeps your readers entertained.

I send cool hugs. No warm ones until winter.

Thanks Elaine, yes, it’s been quite the face lift, and I get that the horizontal line coming from the chunky blunt cut is the best for my face now. I have had longish hair for quite some time, and I always wanted to look a bit different to the ubiquitous short haired older woman. However, I am glad to have made the decision which was basically driven by the heat (my hair was far too hot for our recent hot weather). Yes, the heat got me going and once I did the first cut, I knew it wasn’t quite enough.

I found this latest hairdresser by accident too – so glad we’ve both found them as they are worth their weight in gold!

Thanks again Elaine – keep cool 🙂
