I’ve taken some cracking photos for the next blog post, but I thought I’d just squeeze this in on the last day of October, as this post is about our last day at the film society, as organisers. \u00a0 Because of course, we might very well come back just for a film and won’t that be lovely – to have no responsibility!!!! \u00a0 And for those of you who are new, along with Mr Frugalfashionshopper<\/em>, I’ve been running a film society for the last 5 years. And the last year was very much taken up with finding people to take it on, as we just wanted to stop. \u00a0Well, to cut a very long story short, because it was a challenge, new people came forward – phew!<\/p>\n

We had an Annual General Meeting where we stepped down and then the film, which was Hidden Figures<\/a>, which is the story of Katherine G. Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan three brilliant African-American women who battled both gender discrimination and racism to rise way, way above the expectations of their day to simply the very top of their professions. If you read the text in the link you’ll see in reality there was much more complexity to the story, nevertheless, Hidden Figures is a stunning, must-see film, and of the 44 people who handed in feedback slips 40 gave it Excellent and I think the score at 98% approval is one of the best ever. \u00a0People clapped at the end and one or two had a tear in their eye as it was altogether quite an emotional experience to watch. \u00a0But numbers were a little down and one or two comments made to me before and after by people who hadn’t seen it, made me think, gosh, I think people were just not aware of the really superb story-line and superior acting in it. \u00a0One said, was it about the Three Supremes – ummm, no! And another couple thought it would be too preachy. \u00a0Oh no again, no. But so important to see the simply ghastly racism of then, which one sincerely hopes is no longer, but you know…. AND ye gods, to see a woman like Katherine Johnson being told she couldn’t attend a committee because, well, no women<\/em> ever did, was just jaw-dropping! \u00a0 But not preachy! \u00a0It was exciting and uplifting – a really great film – go see it!<\/p>\n

I wore my AGM dress. And people, I haven’t got any pics of it. \u00a0We were too fraught on the day to take any, either in my flat or during the AGM, but here I am wearing it two years ago!<\/p>\n

There’s a small check motif running \u00a0through it and it’s actually got a fish-tail at the back with quirky pleats – apologies, no photo of that.<\/p>\n

But I think it’s interesting to see what two years has done to my face and neck. Which I don’t mind one bit. Hey, the current me, is 71, what do you expect? \u00a0However, two things, first, I note that two years ago I was dyeing my eyebrows, and I haven’t ventured there again since I went slightly pink after a dyeing session about a year ago. \u00a0But I still haven’t found the ideal product to darken my eyebrows, which I regret. \u00a0You see, I don’t need to paint or shade them in with a powder or paint as they’re already present with, to be absolutely clear, thick and bristly hairs. \u00a0No, I need to darken the many white hairs and I have yet to find the right product to do that – anyone?<\/p>\n

And second – my hair. Gosh, it’s a bit yellow! This old photo confirms to me that I like my transition to white (at the front) and grey (at the back). I think my natural colour will be a better look.<\/p>\n

Anyway, that’s all for now. \u00a0Btw, I may, from time to time, write about films because I do watch a lot of films. Two recent ones, I highly recommend are, Armando Iannucci’s The Death of Stalin<\/a> and Sally Potter’s The Party<\/a>. Both are ensemble pieces with high quality direction and acting. No banging and crashing and jumping around, just two intelligent films that you watch with absorption and delight.<\/p>\n
