Last Wednesday we celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary (yes, been married that long) and we did what we love best, which was to visit an exhibition. \u00a0But as our trains to London are so bad (long story, don’t ask) we decided to wander around Brighton and visit an exhibition in Brighton museum.<\/p>\n

It was a lovely relaxing day as we went by bus to Brighton \u2013 free for us oldies \u2013 and then a coffee in the grounds of Brighton Pavilion.<\/p>\n

If you think the building looks daftly exotic you’d be right, as it was built in the Indo-Saracenic style (around 1787) for George, Prince of Wales to live in \u2013 just imagine \u2013 and if you think that’s exotic, the inside of the building is totally over the top. The\u00a0domes and minaret, btw, are the work of architect John Nash\u00a0who extended the building in 1815.<\/p>\n

I must say Mr Frugalfashionshopper<\/em> also never says never as the exhibition we saw was Fashion Cities Africa<\/span><\/a>, but he was up for it, and we didn’t regret going as, seriously, if you live near Brighton, I highly recommend it (and I speak as someone who visits the V&A often, and has seen Alexander McQueen’s, Savage Beauty twice). \u00a0The exhibition is not only gorgeous to look at, it gives you great insight into African fashion\u00a0and style in four cities \u2013 Casablanca in Morocco, Lagos in Nigeria, Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Those dresses were sumptuous. I’d be very happy to wear the one on the right.<\/p>\n

The exhibition emphasised that Africa is a continent so, consequently, the fashion will be different in each country within this vast area.<\/p>\n

I loved the positivity of the exhibition as well as the glorious clothes.<\/p>\n

We saw fashion for men as well.<\/p>\n

And let me wear that pink dress, please!<\/p>\n

There was also mention of the vast industry in second-hand clothes sent to Africa and a chance to dress up!<\/p>\n

Was the dressing up just for children? \u00a0No it wasn’t! \u00a0Here’s me wearing a sparkly black jacket and an amazing hat, which I wish I could have taken away with me!<\/p>\n

Btw, I’m wearing that slightly too big dress I bought recently and I have to say, it was really comfy and cool on hot and very humid day.<\/p>\n

I’ve put the jacket back but the hat was lovely and hard to take off!<\/p>\n

And here’s another look at some Brighton graffiti taken when I was in Brighton again on Saturday visiting a swishing event held for Calais Action<\/span><\/a>, a charity helping to feed the people stuck in Calais.<\/p>\n

As I’d read that there’s some compassion fatigue and people are going hungry in the camp I just had to go, and I’ll feature the 3 items I found at the event in a post shortly.<\/p>\n

As opposed to many people I don’t like the countryside (nice to look at and all that, but…) instead I so love the vibrant urban buzz you get in cities. My new linen skirt, btw, was from my local charity shop and had the usual low price of \u00a32.50.<\/p>\n
