I’ve done it again. \u00a0It’s the end of the month and I haven’t posted the outfit I wore at our Hillcrest Film Society’s March screening. \u00a0We showed Pride<\/span><\/a>, which was hugely popular with our audience who gave it a round of applause at the end. \u00a0I felt both happy at that but also suitably admonished as I’d kept saying Pride was a really funny film, which without a doubt it is. \u00a0But there are some serious issues under the surface of the laughs which I’d forgotten about and the trailer hadn’t reminded me as it just picked out the funniest moments of which there were plenty. \u00a0But the issues that the film deals with contributed, I think, to its reception at the Hillcrest.<\/p>\n

Have you seen the film? \u00a0Borrow or buy a copy of the film immediately if you haven’t. \u00a0 Set in Britain in 1984 it’s based on a true story of a gay and lesbian group who came together to raise money and support miners families in a small village in Wales during the miners’ strike. \u00a0Not everyone in that village is keen on a LGBT group supporting them and there are some amusing set pieces around the worries and misunderstandings between any newcomers coming into a village let alone a disparate group as the one depicted in this great little film.<\/p>\n

More and more I wear a business-like skirt and top as there’s a lot of setting up to do before the film starts. \u00a0The skirt is one I’ve had for a few months – it’s from\u00a0M&S<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0so it’s a good quality one, bought for just under a fiver at \u00a34.99.<\/p>\n

The top is from Peacocks and the jacket is an old charity shop one, very faded now and bought years ago. And do I ever wear anything other than those chunky boots – nope.<\/p>\n

Two things: first, readers of my blog will know I have a pash for Claire Underwood (as played by Robin Wright) of House of Cards<\/span><\/a> fame. \u00a0Those clothes, that figure, although I will say that this season (the 4th) her stomach is so flat she’s almost got a rather strange posture (anyone agree with me?). \u00a0Actually, has anyone seen Borgen<\/span><\/a> with the wonderful\u00a0Sidse Babett Knusden<\/span><\/a> playing a Danish politician? \u00a0Setting aside the nature of the series which (coughs\u00a0nervously,\u00a0as it’s so obvious to those who’ve seen it) is about Danish politics, something you might think boring, but is not at all, now there’s a woman and role model for us all, in more ways than one as she has a fantastic figure with an ever-so-slightly rounded stomach, which was also prominent (literally) in that rather dire arty film The Duke of Burgundy<\/span><\/a> in which the underwear was divine but the rest of it a right turkey, imho.<\/p>\n

So back to the flat-stomached Claire Underwood and her (rather strange) figure. \u00a0For those of you who don’t watch House of Cards (give it a try, why don’t you, but from Season 1, of course, that’s essential) Claire wears nothing but figure-hugging clothes including a large number of pencil skirts. \u00a0I’m wearing these more and more. \u00a0Why, because they look amazing and are very slimming, which is not really necessary for me, but personally I think even if you are quite big – less is more, is better, is slimming. \u00a0Don’t go the draping, and hiding behind, large clothes way. \u00a0I know, I know, I keep saying do as you please, but big clothes won’t make you look slim, and they can make you look even larger. \u00a0Nothing looks better, I think, than a big woman in well-structured, slim-fitting clothes that just skim the hips.<\/p>\n

And second, have you noticed that clothes haven’t featured all that much in March? \u00a0That’s because I haven’t bought anything at all from a charity shop for weeks. \u00a0Until, that is, last Saturday when I bought a hat (which I totally love and will feature in the next post) and an amazing dress (that’ll come up in the following post). \u00a0I truly don’t buy clothes all the time. \u00a0Oh yes, and a neighbour who’s also a chazza hunter gave me a bag of charity shop clothes she didn’t want – had such a fun-time trying them on. \u00a0Feel very enthused to go searching once more!!!<\/p>\n
