Hello everyone

This is a short post wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and gosh, don’t we all want that! I am restraining myself and won’t say too much about the circumstances in the UK but the situation isn’t brilliant, what with so many people being told, at the last minute, to not mix with anyone over the Christmas holidays. My heart goes out to all of you who are unexpectedly alone this year. But let us hope it is just this once.  Hold on to that – next year…. it should be different. And I don’t know about you but when this is all over I shall embrace life and the living of it. Three cheers for that thought!

Here’s also some very big cheers for our wonderful NHS. If the UK has a universal religion I’d say it is the NHS. Yes, it’s flawed and there are things that could be corrected and currently it’s creaking at the knees but whatever political party we vote for here in the UK we all love our healthcare system. What’s not to love – thank you for being there for us throughout our lives and especially now.

And yes, I’m using some old photos, many apologies, but what with some more of that insomnia, plus a flareup of my blepharitis and consequently not wearing any makeup, photos for this week’s blog are a total no-no!  Anyway, here’s my charity shop find of the year!

On my last post I showed you a rather black outfit I might wear for those WhatsApp calls but actually red is such cheery colour. I shall wear this skirt I think, and don’t forget that in the same shop on the same day I also found this item, a Jaeger jacket – what a find that was!

So, I have decided to wear this cheery outfit for Xmas.

I shall casually hang the jacket around my shoulders for those calls.

That’s all for now, it really is a short post – lots to do. Amongst other things we’re playing postie and ferrying around the presents for our children and grandchildren who I am so very happy to say live near us. I have much to be grateful for. So we’re seeing them briefly in their respective gardens, handing them their presents and moving away swiftly, and that is all. But as I said before, next year…..

Back next week with my end of the year Lockdown Diary. Until then, know that I appreciate you all very much.

With love, Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

Merry Christmas Penny, I greatly enjoy your blog and love the shape of that red skirt. A few weeks ago I bought a lovely red felted wool cardigan/jacket in TKMaxx to wear on Christmas Day. We were so looking forward to seeing our granddaughter open her presents and actually sitting around a table at my daughter’s house just round the corner, but now Kent is in Tier 4, it’ll be just my husband and me with a portion of the turkey and vegetables Katy had ordered. I shall still wear the jacket though! So disappointing, but, as you say Next Christmas we can really create a special time, hopefully for all. Christmas Greetings to all your commenters too. And best wishes for a better year to come.

Our plans have not changed. We are going to our daughter’s on Xmas day, just for a few hours, as they live half an hour away and we’re all in tier 2. I said no to another local person and was awake what seemed like half the night feeling very mean about it. It looks like it’s going to be dry and cold for our outside neighbours get together on 24th – I’m hoping for some carol singing! We must stay optimistic that the vaccine will eventually make a difference and we are the first country to start the roll-out. In the short term I’m very much afraid that it will get worse before it gets better.
Was it Dickens’ Tiny Tim who said ‘Merry Christmas one and all’ ? Whoever did say it I endorse the sentiment!

Btw, on Boxing Day we will have gone from Tier 2 to Tier 4 – I’m resigned to that and on the whole think it’s good! But roll on next year! Looking forward to a much better year.

A very Merry Christmas to you and your family. I was worried about you when we got news that the virus had mutated and is spreading faster. Our relatives in the UK are like you and staying home as well. We have been put back into total lockdown now for another month so Christmas lights and books and bird watching will have to keep me happy. All the best to you and all the readers here and a much better one next year for sure.

Yes, there are in fact two fast-spreading mutations, the latest from South Africa, but many of us are going into a much stricter ‘tier’ from the 26th. The emphasis has to be on staying safe for the next few months while we wait to be vaccinated. Yes, here’s to a much better year next year, and all the very best to you too.

Hi Penny! I’m determined not to be late commenting on this post, as I was on your previous one. I love your Christmas outfit. The Jaeger jacket really was an amazing find. Our eldest son and his girlfriend can’t be with us on Christmas Day because we are tier 2 and they are tier 4. We will miss them so much but know that we are fortunate to have our youngest son here and Zeph, of course! I’m trying to focus on the positives, as I know there are may people who are lonely and sad this year and in a far worse circumstances than we are. Like you, I love and value our NHS and I could say so much more about our current situation but this isn’t the time, nor place. All Best Wishes for the festive season and the New Year. June x

Merry Christmas Penny! I think you have the right idea of wearing something bright and cheery for the holiday. It will be a quiet Christmas here, hopefully next year will be different. Yesterday I was able to have a Zoom session with several friends from collage. In past years we have gathered in a local restaurant for a Christmas lunch, but of course not now. In spite of it all there is still much to be thankful for. Here’s hoping for a better 2021!

Like Lynda, we’re in a Tier 2 so can join family – responsibly – for a while on Christmas Day. We are so grateful for that and send loving commiserations to everyone not so fortunate. I promise to think of you all first thing on Friday so please know that you are not forgotten.

Love your Christmas outfit, Penny. So you! I’ve decided to ditch the daft Christmas sweater this year and opt for top o’the range bling. In a moment of madness a couple of years ago I bought a sequinned top in shimmering greens (think mermaid!) from a charity shop. Sad to say, it’s remained stuffed away since then awaiting the right moment. Well, I’ve decided that that has now arrived: December 25th will see me decked out in my twinkly top, black velvet trousers and little black suede boots, determined to have a good time. Yes, I know (now) that sequins aren’t planet-friendly but even so, they’re going to have their day in the sun, and then I’ll think about what do to with them.

Merry Christmas, Penny. Thank you for both of your blogs, I so enjoy them and actually relish our occasional little disagreements!

    Take care

I love your Jaegar jacket. I had a midi length, air-force blue, size 8, Jaegar coat when I was 16 (child insurance policy paid out, it was the only way I would ever have got anything that expensive). My Mum wasn’t happy at the price of it, but I LOVED that coat. Never had anything else from Jaegar since and I’m 66. And stopped being a size 8 many years ago. 😁

Yes, this year, Christmas will be quite different for all of us. We usually have our elder son, wife, and granddaughter visiting for at least a week but we encouraged them to remain at home two states away. Thus, they put up their own Christmas tree and we had fun shipping our son’s childhood tree ornaments and gifts for them to enjoy. Locally, our younger son and family will be visiting us but carefully scheduling it out on quite different days. Thus, Christmas dinner will be sometime in early January. LOL! Perhaps, this is a positive from the pandemic…to count/treasure each and every day. We are re-evaluating, reviewing, and recalculating what our traditions should mean. Yet, striving to keep the origin of Christmas at the center of our days.
In the meantime, I am up and dressing each day, wearing my thrift shop Christmas jewelry…even with my sweater and jeans outfits! I do love the Christmas brooches. Last month, I found a delightful bracelet with Christmas charms.
Merry Christmas, Penny, and to your Readers…from over the Pond…and a continent away! Do stay safe. Good health to all as we enter the new year.
