Hello everyone

First of all – here’s wishing you all the very best for 2019!

Well, the new year is here so have you made any New Year resolutions?  Actually I haven’t, because I think I’m done with those as I often make some vague (albeit sincere) promises at the beginning of the year, and then either find it very hard to keep them or they’re broken instantly.  Instead, I’ll look back over some of my bargain buys (briefly), and then look forward to things that I’m definitely doing over the coming months.

Looking back

My best buy for winter wear absolutely has to be the yellow coat at £5 from a charity shop in Poole Dorset.

That, worn with my new yellow pom-pom hat and last year’s yellow scarf, is my favourite outerwear for the grey, and now, today, quite cold winter weather in the UK.

My best summer wear was a dress bought new, but I love the understated, slightly 50s look to it and, boy was it cool as I walked along the hot streets of London town. It’s worn here with one of those packable hats and a thin Hennes jacket, which quickly got rolled up and put into that yellow backpack, and that backpack, although bought new, has earned its place in my best-buys as I wear it nearly every day, even now in the winter.

Looking forward

Two things stand out in 2019 and one of them coming along is something I don’t look forward to. Yes, it’s that B word, which I won’t say another thing about here, but I will be writing about it in My Other Blog – icon on the side or at the bottom if viewing this your phone. Incidentally nothing new there since that last week before Christmas. We await further developments…..

Sooo, to keep my sanity through this year, here is my latest development!!!

Yes, that’s my makeup drawer! This is where I write my blogs, in my bedroom. It is my space and where a lot of thinking, researching and writing goes on, but what has surprised my friends when I show them round our small and minimalist flat is that the drawers of this desk are not full of stationery, instead they’re full of makeup. Oh, they say, I thought these drawers would contain something to do with your work.  But I reply, this is my work – or it will be. Now, I absolutely am not stopping writing this blog. Writing is my first love and I shall never, ever, stop posting about the great bargains I find in charity shops, along with issues that are important to us all as we age.  However, it is good to have a project, and this is a big one for me.  I have been thinking about getting out of my comfort zone and going on YouTube to do makeup videos for some time now, but rather like when I started blogging (and also when I changed the site) it does take time.  Mainly, because there is so much to learn, in effect, I am making little films for you.  And I hesitate to say I’m trying to make it perfect before I plunge into the arena of YouTube – because, people, the videos absolutely won’t be perfect.  This is going to be a big learning curve and all I can say is it will be rather like the start of this blog – there will be developments and improvements over the coming weeks and months and, I hope, years.

Anyway, rather than dithering around and saying no it can’t be put up yet, because of this and because of that (which I have been doing for several weeks) I’m going to jump in – like right now!!!! And no, I haven’t got hundreds of videos up there – just the one – and it’s my introduction, which will take you all of one and half minutes to watch. Sooo, click here for that. And then next week, I shall put up my first makeup video.  Yes, in next week’s post I will write more about why I’m doing this (I have serious reasons) and also we’ll look at what you could get from watching me putting on makeup.

Actually do have a look at the video as there’s a big fat red sign at the end of the one and half minutes, which says SUBSCRIBE. I do hope you will. I mean, the YouTube thing is very different to a blog and you won’t get an email to tell you every time I post (or upload) on YouTube like you do with Frugalfashionshopper, so you have to look.  And I guess there may be different communities of people who go on YouTube but don’t do blogs and vice versa. But hey, if you’re not a YouTuber why not give my videos a try, it could be fun! And I’d love to have you accompanying me as I learn to make these films and, of course, share my makeup tips with you!

More news of this next week, but that’s all for now, although, here’s me saying again (and I won’t go on about it once it’s up and running) do go on to that link and subscribe!  Thanks!

Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

P.S. I shall also be posting about fitness and health, and de-cluttering and the guru Marie Kondo, currently on Netflix very soon.

Can’t wait to see more of your videos!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:19 am

Thanks Nancy, coming soon, although it is quite a challenge!

  • 4th January 2019 at 9:37 am

    Hello, Penny
Good luck with your new venture! As someone who looks after her old face with day and night cream and associated stuff but who can’t be bothered with the daytime grunge (my term), I shall be interested to see if you can persuade me otherwise. I love lipsticks and an occasional dab of eyeshadow – and nail polish, always – but find the shop lighting very unhelpful in finding right shades. So, I gave up bothering years ago and instead spend my money on not painting my face, but paper and canvas! Each to her own, eh? Even so, I might be your first covert! Do you feel lucky? x

    • 4th January 2019 at 12:30 pm

Ah, a typo! Covert should read coNvert! Also re-read my last sentence and realised it sounds a bit Dirty Harryish. Sorry about that, Penny, I’m sure you got my meaning but in hindsight it doesn’t read too well. Naughty Zee! 😱

      • 5th January 2019 at 10:21 am

Gosh, no worries Zepherine! I didn’t read it any which way (!) Thanks and we’ll see how things pan out xxx

Just watched the videos, you are a bit like a more polished Mary Beard. That is a compliment as she has a fun sense of style as well. I wore my £7 Zara linen jacket first day back at work in line with only charity buys for 2019 policy. Looking forward to more!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:25 am

Yes, that’s my policy too – nothing new, although sadly that resolution will be broken as I do need a new bra and bras are impossible 2nd hand, there are limits, but the important thing is not to buy the basic skirts/tops/tees/dresses/coats as these items are easily found. And Mary Beard! Well, what with her brilliant mind and her truly impressive hair, I do take it as a compliment!!!

I look forward to seeing your videos, Penny, as others for older women I’ve seen, although useful, are generally trying to sell products and so an astonishing number of different (expensive!) products are used – not what I want to be doing first thing in the morning!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:27 am

And also the older women in these videos are usually very unlined – not me!

  • 4th January 2019 at 10:43 am

Thanks Penny and good luck. Tried to subscribe but it didn’t work. Something about gmail accounts-am not interested in having any more emails thank you. But if you have embedded links here I guess I will find you on YouTube eventually. Or type your name when you become famous!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:28 am

Ha, ha, famous only when I have those huge numbers and do I want that? Not sure! Let’s see how it pans out 🙂

  • 4th January 2019 at 10:51 am

Just watched video, can’t wait for the next one. I’m not very confident with my makeup & would appreciate any tips you can pass on .

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:29 am

Will try my best for you 🙂

  • 4th January 2019 at 11:27 am

Very brave to jump into the Youtube world, I will go and watch your taster! I thought about it but don’t have time with work and blogging. Maybe something for when I leave work. Happy New Year to you! My only resolution is not to make any, for the reasons you gave! Plus January is such a bleak month, why add to our pain with diets and other draconian measures?!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:32 am

Gail, it is very very time-consuming. I have just discarded the first 3 full videos I’ve made and thrown them (figuratively) in the bin. Was coming in from the wrong angle – sooooo much to learn. But actually that’s good. I was like this at the beginning of blogging though and things will be changed and improved over time, of that I’m sure. Happy New Year, Gail!

  • 4th January 2019 at 12:50 pm

Just checked out the video, I have make up drawer envy! Looking forward to more. I have to agree with Lois, most make up videos want to sell their products and seem to use a large number of products that are just not realistic for everyday. It will be interesting to watch you when you’re not trying to sell us things.
    Best wishes Chrissie

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:38 am

The desk/dressing table came from Ikea and inserts for drawers (£5) from Ikea also.

Re: selling. As you can probably see I don’t sell anything at all on the blog. YouTube might evolve differently, but you have to have humungeous numbers to attract advertisers and things given to you. Nowhere near that and I will watch myself like a hawk to not commercialise this new venture – be assured on that. At the moment it’s just a slightly scary project !!!!!

  • 4th January 2019 at 1:11 pm

Firstly, I would love to see the backpack you mentioned 🙂 That yellow coat is gorgeous and I love your boots too. I will definitely be heading over to watch your video!

  • 4th January 2019 at 1:48 pm

Lovely video! I must confess that I don’t watch a ton of YouTube videos, but was somewhat put off by some of the makeup tutorials I’ve seen in the past which advocated too much makeup for the older woman (maybe to sell more products?). In any case, you seemed a natural in yours and I hope your makeup tutorials will be the same.
    Cheers, Lynn

After watching both videos, I realized I was smiling….. that’s a good sign for me. Anything that makes me smile is giving me a positive feeling. I’ve subscribed and look forward to seeing future videos, and to continue reading your blog!! No new year resolutions for me, but I do like to make small changes in my life, whatever, and de-clutter where I can!!

  • 4th January 2019 at 4:51 pm

I’m eager to watch your videos as I can already tell they’re going to be authentic!

  • 4th January 2019 at 7:33 pm

Subscribed – thank you, Penny. I shall look forward to seeing your new videos. Hopefully you can show 65 year old me how to use under eye concealer properly as I’ve never been able to master it! Good luck and Happy New Year!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:40 am

Well, one of the things I’ll be saying is that under-the-eye concealer doesn’t really work unless you have no wrinkles!!!!!! Then it does. The important thing is not to look blueish – watch this space and the videos to see how I try to not look blue!

  • 4th January 2019 at 8:25 pm

Well done, Penny. I’m looking forward to the make up videos!

    Happy 2019!

  • 4th January 2019 at 9:38 pm

Just watched the video and LOVED it. You are a NATURAL and you sound just as I always thought you would, so warm and winning. I love your immaculate make-up drawer for which I have serious envy. Can’t wait for next week when the fun begins with make up application, one of my favourite things in life. One thing I am mega interested in is lips and lipstick. In all modesty I have very good skin for a 75-year-old but I have lips as dry as the Sahara desert. When I apply lipstick it stays fresh looking for about 10 minutes, then begins to seriously dry out and sink into my lips. I have tried every lip balm on the market but nothing seems to work. Will you investigate for me? I would be delighted for some help.
Regards and good wishes for your new venture Penny.
    Frances Whyte
PS Your brown top is gorgeous on you. I love the touch of glitter!

  • 4th January 2019 at 11:52 pm

The yellow coat was a great charity shop find. I’ve been intending to start doing YouTube videos regularly for ages now (I’ve only managed two so far!) but like you, I put it off because I want it to be slick and look professional, but I think I just need to get on with it now. Finding the time is the issue! I’ll pop over to YouTube to see yours and subscribe!

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:42 am

Thanks Emma, and it is absolutely a challenge. I have just thrown (figuratively) the first 3 videos I made in the bin as I was coming in at the wrong angle – soooo much to learn! But hey, it’s actually an enjoyable challenge so yes, watch this space! Rushing off to make some more!

  • 5th January 2019 at 2:19 am

I love the yellow coat, what a great find! 🙂

Congrats on starting a youtube channel too! It’s definitely different from blogging, but I enjoy it! 🙂

Happy New Year! Hope that your 2019 is off to a great start and you’ve been having a great week 🙂

  • 5th January 2019 at 6:19 am

Good for you! I look forward to watching more. Also if your viewers click on the little “bell” next to the subscribe button, there will be a notification on their YouTube list whenever a new video is posted.

    • 5th January 2019 at 10:44 am

Gretchen – honestly I know nothing – I was wondering why I was never notified about the people I followed on YT!!!! And yes found that out a couple of hours after I posted! Sooo much to learn!

  • 5th January 2019 at 10:49 am

Wow, Penny! I just watched your video (and subscribed) and I’m so impressed. You seem very natural and relaxed on screen and it’s always interesting to hear someone’s voice. I’m looking forward to the next one!

  • 5th January 2019 at 2:13 pm

    Hi Penny
Just to say how much I look forward to your blog posts. I too love shopping in charity shops and find it so satisfying when I find a bargain.
You always look amazing ,I love your style and the way you put the look together. I have watched the video and find you so warm and approachable,I can’t wait for the next video.
You are an inspirational lady and I wish you all the best for 2019.

  • 7th January 2019 at 1:20 am

Happy New Year, Penny! I have subscribed to your YouTube channel as stated in your blog. “Love your accent.”, says the Southern Californian! You are wonderful and inspiring for trying something so new…and technological to boot! Looks like you’ve met your target numbers…and then some!
    Best of luck!

    Hi Penny

Look forward to your emails, and seeing what stylish bargains you have found in Charity Shops

I have started to add #MyHistory lables to items I donate to charity shops (with a little bit of history about the Item where I wore it how I felt and my email)

I often think when I pick up an item in particular a dress I wonder if it’s was bought for a special event I’d love to know it’s history

Hence me putting #MyHistory lables on, I’m now trying to encourage others to do the same and I thought it may be of interest to you Penny and your followers
