Hi there

Yes, it’s that time of year again!  And by that I mean, it’s time to wear those jackets.  I love jackets but there’ve been years when the window of opportunity to wear them is very short and, before you know it, the autumn/fall weather is over and the jackets in your wardrobe are just not enough warm enough to wear.

But after a really windy and wet day yesterday the sun is out and there’s a beautiful autumnal glow to the day.  So when I went for a walk this Sunday morning I wore this jacket.

It’s a jacket I’ve had for about three years, and reader, I wasn’t being frugal when I bought it, because look, it’s proper tweed.  Ok, it’s also quite hairy but it’s going to last and last. And it’s so warm.  I love it.

But here below are three of my best charity shop jackets, and the thing is my favourite shape for a jacket is quite boxy and short. Like this one.

And this.

And this one, which is really not all that warm as it’s so short.

And that’s what reduces the length of time I wear these favourite garments – they don’t cover me up and ultimately I feel quite cold in them.  But whilst on holiday in France I donated a lot of my holiday gear to the charity shop my friend Helen runs in Lauzerte.  So in exchange my friend gave me this jacket, which I think solves the problem.

This jacket is a much longer length and I shall wear it a lot!

Note also the boots, which I bought for next-to-nothing quite recently.  They were unworn and such a bargain.

They’re going to be a favourite footwear item!

That’s all for now, but are you wearing your autumn/fall clothes now?

With love

I love tweed! Autumn is the best time of the year for great clothing. All those warm colours and great materials. But that’s all I like about this season!???

I used to think that winter was my favourite season as I prefer woolly warm weather clothes to summer outfits, but have changed my mind as UK winters have become increasingly grey and cloudy. But on a good weather Autumn day with the sun out – there’s nothing lovelier, I think. Tweed’s great, isn’t it!

A wonderful selection of jackets , each so different on you . The Harris Tweed is such a classic and as you say its quality will ensure it lasts and lasts. I love my jackets and wear them all year round.

Thanks Jill, like you I’m a jacket and skirt person. Your skirts have the edge though – so iconic – am looking out for more like yours x

I have always loved a good jacket! I found Michael a Harris Tweed on eBay a few years ago-I love the label and he loves the jacket. All of these are terrific-I can’t even pick
my favorite. We are moving a little slower than you into fall but our jacket weather is finally getting here. Fall and spring are my favorite seasons I think.

Autumn/fall is a favourite season. Summer is always meant to be the best, but I can’t say I truly like the heat, and that’s said by a Brit in a country where really we don’t get heat anything like you do!!!

So yes, I love getting my tweed jacket out and I love the weather that goes with it.

Hi Penny. I’m new to your blog and enjoying it so much. We are very much of an age and I am also a great fan of pre-loved clothes and get much pleasure from a special ‘find’. It’s great to mix up new and second hand to create a unique look and with age i think comes confidence to carry it off.

Hello and welcome Viv, great to meet you! And that hunt for a bargain is such fun, isn’t it!! Agree with you absolutely.

Love the tweed jacket. I:s say if you ever get sick of it pass it on to me, but short and boxy doesn’t suit me. I need a longer line. But you look great in all those jackets and I love the faux (hopefully) snakeskin boots too.

Those pics of the boxy jackets were taken last year (the longer jacket pic was taken last w/e) and very sadly the boots by the end of that winter they fell apart with the leather flaking off big time – they were very old charity shop boots so they really did their bit. I miss them and will have to find another pair like them. And the boxy jacket are great but usually too cold in winter for the bus stop. I try to wear them, though, for as long as poss.

Your Harris Tweed jacket is fabulous, a quality, forever piece. When choosing jackets I insist they cover my bum, I’m too cold otherwise. Love the colours and style of your French jacket.

I agree that actually jackets should cover the bottom, but think that if I buy lighter, thinner boxy jackets like the French one, I can wear them under a coat. What I have to stop buying are the ones that pretend to be tweedy and end just below the waist – they really aren’t practical!

You’ve picked on two of my favourite items, Penny – jackets and boots! I don’t have many shoes as I seem to go straight from sandals to boots. I do, however, maintain a strict ‘one in one out’ policy! I love your latest pair of boots but I wouldn’t like to say which jacket I prefer as they all suit you.

I am a jacket lover as well & I have a collection that I have acquired over the years. I live in Australia & they are a great choice for winter in Sydney as we don’t get the real low temperatures. I love the cooler weather as I think it suits more elegant dressing than the hot summer months. Our trouble is that with the mad weather patterns of recent times the window for wearing jackets is reducing.

Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. I love the first three jackets! Somehow I like the length. It looks flattering. Yes, you are right they are sort of not ideal from an insulation point of view as they keep the bum uncovered. But that shouldn’t be a problem in the UK. You won’t have -40C.

    • 27th October 2017 at 8:36 am

That’s so right, Nicole!! We Brits always complain about the weather but we really have no idea what true cold is like or heat for that matter! The boxy jackets are great, but even though it’s not that cold I do lot of travel on the bus and waiting at the bus stop those short jackets just don’t do it! I must be more realistic when I buy! Thanks for hosting x
