Hi everyone

It’s mid September now and many bloggers are talking up the importance of transitioning to Autumn/Fall clothing.  I’m finding it quite difficult to get this right, but actually shouldn’t we just look out of the window and go, I think I’ll wear that! Mind you, it is a bit of a challenge to do this living in an apartment on the 3rd floor, so I often get it wrong and either feel far too hot or too cold.

And I’m packing again!  On Saturday we’re off for a week to Dungeness in Kent, which is an unusual place as it’s a very small hamlet on a headland made up mainly of shingle. The houses on this bleak flat headland are predominately wooden and many have been made up from old railway carriages. It is most famous for Prospect cottage once the home of the artist and film director Derek Jarman, and it’s garden is apparently lovely made up from driftwood, pebbles, metal scraps and a few hardy plants. We have a cottage right on the beach and I shall take lots of photographs.

So I shall be putting jeans and walking shoes in my case plus many layers so hopefully I can cope with the changeable weather we have in the UK.

One item that will go in the suitcase is this week’s charity shop find.  Here I am wearing this bright red plaid blouse.

Blouses aren’t usually my thing, but this caught my eye and I thought, I could wear that!  Cost £6.  And it’ll be good to wear through the Autumn as I can pop a t-shirt under it when it starts to get cold. I also rather like the sparkly broach-like items on the collar.

Nice to be sparkly in the coming cooler days!

Note I’m wearing my favourite type of jeans – skinnies.  I’m cooking and dishing out small portions for Mr F’s diet (he’s doing well) and have lost a couple of pounds myself. I’ll have to watch that as I don’t want to lose too much more so I’ll allow myself some cake on holiday (!) but it’s nice to be wearing the skinnies again, they’ve not been worn for over a year.

That’s all for now.  I might not be able to post next week, but as I said I will take lots of photographs and I’ll put them on Instagram, and they’ll also be in the blog post I do when I get back.

Until then, with love, Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

That sounds absolutely lovely. A nice quiet break to watch the water, yes. Do have a wonderful time and I will be waiting to see your photos. The addition of the bling on the collar of your new shirt is perfect.

Actually Diane, I forgot to say that my son, daughter-in-law and my 10-month-old grandson are coming with us. So I’m not sure whether this will be a quiet holiday! It’s in a glorious spot though and I shall take lots of photos.

I am going on holiday too and worried by the forecast which is pretty poor.
Your shirt is super.I have a Joules rugby shirt which should take a couple of layers underneath it!
Our weather is reliably mad this year.
My husband is taking rugby shirts too ,with a winter jumper!
So much for an Indian summer.
    Best wishes to all.

Ooh enjoy your holiday too and thanks re: the shirt. I can see from the forecast that there’s rain at the end of the week – fingers crossed we don’t have too much.

Best wishes to you too Ro 🙂

I’d love to see Derek Jarman’s garden did you ever see his film ‘Blue’? I love you Stuart tartan shirt. I’m cutting down in the portions too, jeans getting uncomfortable, sigh. You don’t look like you need to lose weight but nice of you to support your husband though.

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:09 am

Although it’s only two hours away we haven’t visited Dungeness before, however, I’ve always wanted to and here we are, one day away from a week there! The portions are interesting – I was always cooking too much. And I’m glad to have lost a couple of pounds as over the last year and this I’ve got several pairs of jeans I couldn’t get into and had to switch to the baggy jeans but I do prefer the skinnies. I can see I’m going to have ‘fat’ jeans and ‘thin’ jeans 🤣

Btw, don’t think I’ve ever seen a Derek Jarman films – will have to rectify that.

Looking forward to see photos of Dungeness. I know I’ve been there but can’t picture it for me. Your blouse is gorgeous. I’m looking for a tartan skirt for ages in exactly those colours! Have fun Penny!

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:10 am

Oooh a tartan skirt would be good or a dress! I’m sure you’ll remember Dungeness when you see the photos as it’s pretty unusual place – and right next to a nuclear power station, of course!

For a second there, I thought you meant you were moving! Aaack! I love that you’re going away. A cottage on the beach is just what the mind, spirit and body need after the season we’ve been having. Enjoy! I love your plaid shirt. I found a plaid dress of that exact tartan this summer at thrift for $6.95. It’s a bit much in a slightly oversized dress, but I thought it would be fun for Christmas! Enjoy your holiday. xo karen

Well, Karen, you never know 😉

The cottage looks to be really nice and was once a writers retreat. And your plaid dress sounds amazing and what a bargain. Now I’ve seen myself in the blouse, I think I quite fancy a red tartan dress myself!!!

      Thanks x

I have very fond memories of Dungeness, my son was married in the lighthouse ,it was a beautiful warm sunny day 12th of September 12yrs ago ,
    enjoy your stay

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:15 am

Oh how lovely – what a place to have a wedding! I will enjoy our stay – thanks 😀

  • 16th September 2021 at 2:39 pm

You’re so right about this change into autumn and wearing summer clothes for too long can look wrong.
You’ve got it so right with that shirt and the skill seems to be in getting those next seasons colours right.
Have a great break. I’m looking forward to seeing your pics.

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:23 am

It’s been very changeable weather here and I think Dungeness has rain at the end of the week. Thanks re: the shirt – it was a great find and thanks re: the holiday. It will be great to get away again 😀

  • 16th September 2021 at 7:12 pm

The tartan shirt and lovely glasses are a great look for Autumn. Very cheery. Have a lovely time in Dungeness. The weather here has been better of late so you might be lucky and get some good weather to walk the shingle beach. Keep your eyes open as I hear all sorts of things wash up on the beach. I saw a bit of a Bellarmine pottery jug that someone found beachcombing there. I’d love to find something like that!

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:28 am

Thanks re: the shirt and glasses and I think rain is forecast at the end of the week – fingers crossed it keeps away.

I will keep lookout but unfortunately I have also seen some photos in the media of refugees being brought to the Uk and landing on Dungeness beach – I wonder if it’ll happen when we are there? It’s an international tragedy that no-one seems to be tackling in the right way least of all Priti Patel, and I hope no-one is booing near me!!!!! Apart from that I’m sure it’ll all be lovely. Thanks Trish

I think you look fantastic in the tartan blouse and your red glasses, have a lovely holiday and I look forward to seeing your photos in the next blog.

Thank you so much Charmaine, it’ll be lovely to get away again and I’ll take lots of photos 😀

  • 16th September 2021 at 7:56 pm

I have always had a “thing” for red tartan flannel shirts. this one is really special, the bling on the collar makes it distinctly not lumberjack. And it will be nice to have for the holidays as well. Loving the idea of a quiet week by the sea .Enjoy every moment! Darby

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:35 am

Yes, I’m loving the bling part of the shirt. And I forgot to say that my son, daughter-in-law and 10-month-old grandson are coming with us so it might not be a particularly quiet week 🤣

But it’ll be lovely and I’ll take lots of photos – thanks Derby

What an interesting place to visit. I read very recently a piece about Derek Jarman’s garden. The red plaid blouse looks great – as do skinnies. Looking very svelte! I get a bit bored with the transition to autumn posts, but I may write something about good layering to stay warm in winter.
    Have a great time ! x

    • 17th September 2021 at 8:38 am

Yes, despite living only two hours away we’ve never visited Dungeness and I can’t wait to see that garden having read so much about it.

I’m glad to be back into the skinnies and want to stabilise around this weight. And yes re: all those posts but never tire of layering posts as layers are so necessary with our weather!

Thanks, I will have a great time 😀

    1. Love the shirt and the red accessories! Sandals look comfy!
    2. Had a great geography lesson as I had to look up “a headland made up mainly of shingle”!
    3. I’m the heaviest I’ve been since college…not counting pregnancies! Need to cut back, too!
    4. We are hoping to do something similar with son, dil, four grandkids, and maybe a dog(!) in a couple of weeks.
Keeping it short so you can pack and be on your way! Enjoy yourselves!

    • 18th September 2021 at 7:47 am

Thank you so much Charlene, I was so pleased to get that shirt. As for the holiday it’s going to be so good to get to know Oscar better and be with him longer.

Mostly packed now and off in a few hours!

  • 17th September 2021 at 12:06 pm

I love that look on you, so put together but casual and ready for fun!

    • 18th September 2021 at 7:48 am

Thank you so much Arlene – best wishes 😀

  • 17th September 2021 at 3:10 pm

What a fabulous find, Penny! I love the way you have accessorised the shirt which really suits you. I hope you have a wonderful time in Dungeness; a cottage on the beach sounds perfect. I look forward to reading about your adventures there.

    • 18th September 2021 at 7:50 am

Thanks June, I pounced when I saw the shirt and actually thought it wouldn’t fit as it’s a small! But it must be a generous small as I can get into it!

Off in a few hours time and looking forward to it very much.

  • 19th September 2021 at 4:41 am

Hope you are enjoying your time away Dungeness sounds lovely, will look forward to seeing your photos. Your tartan shirt looks so good on you and its touch of bling takes it up a level. Hope the weather gods have been kind. xx

  • 19th September 2021 at 7:31 am

Hi Penny, what a great shirt. Really love it and it suits you perfectly. In fact all the outfit is brilliant (cool! – as my niece would say!) and I agree you look your best in skinnies, as I do. I’ve got and tried lots of other shapes and really like them but skinnies are my favourites.
Enjoy your holiday and the time spent with your family xx
PS Look forward to your take on the situation in Afganistan.

  • 20th September 2021 at 7:13 pm

Love the shirt and the sparkly bits make it even more cool! You suit red,

Hope you have a lovely break. I’ve nort long finished a book by Derek Jarman about how he made his garden at Prospect Cottage and I would love to visit it one day.

  • 22nd September 2021 at 1:38 pm

I just saw your video of the seam engine and realized I need to check your blog! I am not one for blouse that button either but this one is really striking on you! Love the red. I am trying to find one I like but I end up wearing mine around my waist or as a top layer. Enjoy your holiday!
