This is just a quick last post for the year 2017, and quite a visual one at that with a look at my favourite outfits and bargains, which include:

The hat of the year

It’s a ridiculously over-the-top hat, but I cannot get rid of it, so it’s a keeper waiting for a special occasion.  I think it’s one for the summer. And I remember that it cost all of £5.

Also this one.

Note the combination of a long striped top over the jeans, which you roll up slightly.

The skirt and top of the year

You’d think I’d put that steam-punk skirt I featured in my last post.  But here’s a big shout-out to a skirt I bought in Tobago, which I wore all the time in January of this year and, again, quite a lot in the summer.  Gosh, I love it, as I do that old thrifted top which you think wouldn’t go with the multi-coloured skirt, but it does. somehow.

My favourite colours of the year – red and yellow

And did I ever show you this long red one, which I wore on my last cruise?

Yes, dear readers, I used to wear a lot of black, still do, but as I get older I’m moving away from the neutral and on to being much bolder.  Also I think it’s something to do with going grey.

When wearing formal clothes, I say, move away from safe, dark colours and try a bright shade – it’s liberating!

The best of the street photography pics

I really do wear my hats out and about!

There was a cold wind on that day!  I was feeling bit chilly, I can tell you!

And then that amazing yellow coat.

Finally, the bargain of the year which has to be the Michael Kors coat bought from TKMaxx for £45.  Add a nought for the probable original price!

Did I say it’s really quite a large size but it doesn’t seem to matter.  The only fault it has got (am I allowed to say that of a designer jacket!) is that the down tends to moult onto the sweater you’re wearing underneath.  Nothing much but it is noticeable if the item is black.  It’s still a great jacket as it’s so light, yet warm and cosy and, the key thing, waterproof!

My final words are that at the end of this quite challenging year personally (our move) and in the wider world, I say we have to engage, and look outwards, and empathise and aim to understand each other and be kind to each other.  At the same time we must be kind to ourselves.  So there’ll be no New Year resolutions from me, apart from saying, you take care.  Here’s to 2018 and all it brings us.

With best wishes and love

Penny, the Frugalfashionshopper

P.S Mind you, blog posts in 2018 will focus in on fitness, mainly because I am so very unfit myself!  That’s partly due to the virus I’ve just had and partly due to not going to any classes at all during this past year.  That’s going to change!!!

Lovely lady! You are an inspiration and I follow your ideas with interest and enthusiasm! I wish I could keep my hair long like you tho … It’s coloured blonde streaked, but even that is an uphill struggle to get my hairdresser more modern! Happy 2018 and yes to fitness over 70!!! Petal

Thank you Petal. Well, re: hair, never say never! I was never going to go grey and here I am doing it! Actually I had to change my hairdresser as there was a bit of negativity about the colour and length. All the best for 2018!

    Happy New Year to you
I am definitely not a frugal shopper just picky but I love your posts and your attitude
All the best. Onwards and upwards or whatever

Totally agree – about being picky. I look and so many times walk out with nothing. Actually I haven’t bought anything for ages, apart from the Michael Kors jacket. All the best for 2018.

Good round up Penny. Looking forward to more inspiration and ideas in the coming year. I have already worn one of my hats, a brown velvet beret – only because my hair was a mess and I had to go out!! Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

    • 2nd January 2018 at 9:51 am

Great to hear you wore that beret! Brown velvet sounds lovely. All the very best for 2018!

Happy New Year, Penny. I love reading your blog. My favourite hat of yours is the red one with the flowers….I wish I could wear hats but a combination of a small head and quite large stick out ears means I generally rock the Freddie ‘Parrot Face’ Davies look ?. Do you remember him?

    • 2nd January 2018 at 9:53 am

I do remember Freddie Davies! That was in the time when Saturday night telly was very much like the music hall acts of yesterday – meaning, the late 50s and early 60s! Very best to you!

Your blogs are favorites of this reader in the US. Your sobering views on politics and social change are as welcome as your uplifting posts on frugal fashion and travel.
Friends have just moved to Hastings where we hope to visit in 2018. Perhaps we can meet for coffee?

    • 2nd January 2018 at 9:55 am

Thank you Sharon – actually, a new post on My Other Blog is long overdue. If diaries co-incide, absolutely to the coffee!

Love that hat! Wish they were more readily available in clothing stores, which USED to have millinery departments. I look forward to your postings!

    • 2nd January 2018 at 10:03 am

I also remember the big stores with their millinery departments. They still exist in London. In the Spring I went up and amongst other things, popped into Fortnum & Mason and they had a hat department which was absolutely delicious. Yes, I’m saying that the hats were delicious rather than the cakes! The prices though……

All the very best for 2018!

Hi Penny … Love your blogs, love your style, love your outlook. You always look amazing at such little cost! A lady after my own heart, and similarly aged.
Particularly love the yellow coat, hat and bag.
Wishing you and hubby a very Happy and Healthy new year.
Look forward to you being in touch again next year!
    Many thanks for the inspiration.

Haven’t commented in quite a while but still read your posts, usually in a big catch up as time has been in short supply the last few months. Always enjoy your blog and your take on fashion.

Glad to hear you like blogging and the connection with your readers. Best wishes for 2018.

I was fascinated to see your picks. Interesting what “calls” us. Especially your hats, which, for some reason, I equate with “being British”. I live in New Zealand where hats of some sort are worn in the snow, or in summer……..

I would love to join you in your fitness quest.

In all the Christmas huh-bub, I missed your year round up. So thank you for linking up so I could get back on track. I don’t know why I thought you had sent your big show at back to charity but I’m glad you didn’t. It’s so wonderful. You look splendid in most colors but I have to say anything mustard (especially that coat) is my favorite. Take care, Terri
